Program Details

Since 2011, UVU Nursing students have been traveling to Samoa to assist the country with healthcare initiatives. During 2016, the Director General of the Ministry of Health requested the UVU Team to focus on early childhood development, specifically focusing on well-child checks at the primary schools. 

Students will also be conducting screenings for Diabetes on adults in Samoa. UVU Nursing faculty, and students will be working in tandem with indigenous healthcare clinicians to gather basic health infoformation for approximatley 2000 children each year. UVU Students will be engaged using real world contexts within the curriculum and having "hands-on" activites in Samoa that will increase their confidence and professional competence.

Anticipated Curriculum

*Students are expected to enroll in one or two courses for this study abroad.

NURS 4320 Nursing in the Community (2 credits)
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance to BSN-completion program and *University Advanced Standing

NURS 4325 Nursing in the Community Clinical (1 credit)
Prerequisite(s): NURS 3405 and *University Advanced Standing

NURS 495R Independent Study in Nursing (1 credit)
Prerequisite(s): NURS 2410, Departmental approval, and University Advanced Standing

*University Advanced Standing - 24 credits completed, GPA 2.0 or higher MAT 1030 and ENGL 2010 or equivalent.

Program Requirements*

Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.5

Physical requirements: Mild to strenuous activity during the day as well as mild to moderate activity during excursions.

Estimated Program Fee*

Fee covers airfare from Hawaii to Samoa in-country housing and transportation, excursions, most meals, international insurance.

Tuition Waivers

Please contact the UVU Benefits Office for more information. In certain instances, tuition waivers may not apply for an international program.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Pell Grants and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to the program, based on eligibility. Applicant must have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (BA 105) and complete all necessary application forms for financial aid.
