Alternative Breaks

Alternative Break trips take students outside Utah Valley to engage in community projects and learn about poverty and homelessness, food insecurity, health, literacy, environmental concerns, and other issues. These student-led trips immerse students in direct service activities and learning experiences.

I Am First
Leadership Program

The I Am First LEAD Program is a one-year leadership development program for new first-generation freshmen at UVU. ("First-generation" is defined as neither parent/guardian has a U.S. bachelor's degree.)

This program develops students in three key ways:

    1. Helping you recognize and hone your talents and skills (using the Gallup StrengthsFinder Assessment)
    2. Providing you with effective skills and strategies that are vital to succeeding in college
    3. Training you to become a Peer Mentor and student leader at UVU

Students enroll in a 3-credit course each semester (Fall and Spring), in which they will build a community with other first-generation LEAD students, meet regularly with an assigned Peer Mentor, and network with a staff or faculty Mentor. Scholarships may be available for students who apply and are admitted to the program.

Benefits:

  • Develop essential skills to succeed in college and beyond
  • Join a structured community of first-generation freshmen and I Am First staff
  • Receive credit for leadership courses
  • Connect with experienced student and faculty mentors
  • Earn “Leadership Certification” on your Academic Transcript

We are no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2019 - Spring 2020 academic year. Applications for the 2020-2021 year will open in January.
