Canvas Course Template

Overview

This page is a complete guide to the Internship Course Template for internship courses at Utah Valley University.  For the majority of campus internship courses, university required internship assignments are automatically placed into your course shortly before each semester.  If this is all you need to add to your course (most often due to a late-add course or an accidental deletion of content), please visit the Required Content page.

Internship Course Template: Content Import

You can skip to the next section, "Internship Course Template: After Content Import" if you are visiting this link from your canvas course and/or the template has already been imported into your course.

Visit the existing canvas internship course you would like to update.  In the icon list on the left of your screen (courses, calendary, inbox, etc.), select the commons icon (see below).  In the search bar of commons type "utah valley ".  You will then select "Utah Valley University Internship Course Template". Do not select the Utah Valley University Internship Courses (Import for Required Missing Content)  as this template also includes the content in that module.    Next, check the box for your existing course and select "Import into Canvas" and Voilà!, the content has been imported.

Internship Course Template: After Content Import

  1. Outdated Content:  If you have similar, but outdated content in your course, you will want to delete the previous semester's Supervisor Evaluation and Completion Assessment content.
  2. Required Content Module:  Move the assignments to a new module/s or simply rename the current module.  Unless you are experienced with the assignment source code editor, we do not recommend editing the assignment page content for required assignments as the assignment pages have specific code that connects to your grade book.   You will also want to leave the assignment submission type as 'No Submission'.
  3. Optional Content Module: Select any assignments you want to use from the optional content module and either move them to a new module/s or simply rename the current module.  Edit assignment content to your liking.  Unless you are experienced with the assignment source code editor, we do not recommend editing the assignment page content for the Midterm Supervisor Evaluation as the assignment page has specific code which connects to your grade book (You will also want to leave the assignment submission type as 'No Submission' for this assigment).  You can still adjust assignment settings such as availability, due date, and point value, however and for other assignments, feel free to change the submission type.
  4. Update your syllabus:  If needed, there is a Syllabus Resource provided for this course.   Either way, this is a good time to update your syllabus with your name and contact information and adjust or add any content.
  5. Save and publish your content: Once you are satisfied with your course, ensure thatt all appropriate modules and assignments are published.  A common error observed is the publishing of assignments but not the modules, so be aware of this! Finally, publish the course!  Congratulations! You are good to go!

FAQs and Troubleshooting

How does grading work for assignments?

Completion Assessment: Canvas will automatically assign a 100% score after completion.

Supervisor Evaluations: For both the end of semester Supervisor Evaluation (required) and Mid-Term Supervisor Evaluation (optional), a 10% point value is assigned after the student initiates the assignment.  The grade will be changed to 100% score after the supervisor completes their portion of the evaluation.  You have the option of adjusting point values after completion.

Other Assignments:  All other assignments are graded by the course instructor.

What if students are reporting technical issues with the assignments? An Internship Services department representative will work with the student to get any issues resolved.  Common problems include browser compatibility issues or  in the case of supervisor evaluations, an organization's strict email security settings.  The learning agreement, completion assessment, and supervisor evaluation assignments all include a link to a Support Form that is managed through the Internship Services Department.  We do not expect you to try and solve any technical issues.

Does my previous semester content get overwritten? The required Completion Assessment and Supervisor Evaluation (which s placed in your course each semester ) will not overwrite the previous semester's similar content.  Content imported from Canvas Commons will overwrite the previous semester contents if they have the same name.  If you observe an overrwrite of content you didn't want, it is recommended to go to your Canvas course list and find your previous semester's course content.  From there you can use the "copy to" feature next to the assignment and import it into your existing course. You may also see that some of your modules are replaced.  If you would like to simply update your course without re-importing the entire course, look for the Updates button at the top of the Canvas Commons resource.  This will give you the option to overwrite older content with newer, updated content.

I have multiple copies of the same assignment in my course? If you observe assignments with the exact same titles, compare the two and then delete one of the assignments.  Check the semester in the assignment title, however, to ensure you aren't deleting the most recent version of the assignment. You may observe duplicates if you import content from Canvas Commons in addition to the content that is automatically placed in your course each semester.

Why does my course suddenly look empty or misconfigured?

Depending on your current course settings, your course may look differently after content is added to your course. Your content is not deleted or moved.  To alleviate this, please go to the "Choose Home Page" setting on the right-hand side of the page and choose your desired view.  See image below.
