State Legislature Internships
Every spring semester Utah Valley University sends a group of students to the State Capitol to intern for Representatives and Senators during the legislative session. Interns act as assistants to legislators during the 45-day period. Students have the unique opportunity of working directly with their Representative or Senator and having a front row seat to the legislative process. Legislative intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to: constituent correspondence, media relations, policy research, social media, bill tracking, scheduling and secretarial duties. Interns are paid a stipend of roughly $2,700 for their 6 week internship at the Utah State Capitol.
Eligibility
In order to apply an applicant must:
- Be a current UVU student with Sophomore, Junior or Senior status
- Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills
- Commit to all time requirements necessary for the internship
Preparatory course & credit
During the first three weeks of the spring semester, UVU interns are required to take a preparatory course offered through UVU’s Political Science and Communication Departments, The Hinckley Institute, and UVU Internship Services. The three week course is held all-day, with one week of curriculum held at the Utah State Capitol. The course is designed to better equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed while interning. In addition, during the session interns will attend lunch seminars once a week to discuss ongoing legislation, state policy and local politics with UVU’s Vice President of University Relations, Cameron Martin. The internship, preparation course and weekly seminars combined total 12 credits. Students are not allowed to take any additional credits during Spring Semester.
