Network Access and Registration

FortiNAC Networks

We use a software product named FortiNAC to manage registration and access to the campus network. This software enables us to open the network to personal devices brought to campus (Bring Your Own Device). The primary purpose of the FortiNAC Agent is to ensure that computers have up-to-date antivirus and security patches. This helps us provide access of the many thousands of systems connected, while reducing the spread of malware. UVU has been using this software for the wireless network since 2013. We are now expanding it to the rest of the network, which includes wired connections.

Computers that are plugged in to the wired network will need the FortiNAC Agent installed in order to stay connected. This process will be automatic for computers on the domain, but can also be done through a download link below. If your computer is running Mac OS or has a local login, you will need to download manually.

Download and Register

To register your computer click the appropriate download link, then run the installer file:

After the agent is installed, a login window may display similar to the image below. Enter your UVID credentials in that window to complete the registration process.

Registering Linux and Embedded Devices

All network devices will need to be registered. If your wired network device has a web browser, it can be registered at this link:      (This link works on campus only)

Devices that do not have a web browser, such as scientific equipment, will need to be manually registered. Please provide the MAC address to your area technician for such devices. Most network printers, IP cameras, and IP phones are already registered.

Captive Portal

Devices that are not registered will be put on the registration network until the device is registered. Network access on the registration network is very limited, which will cause disruption to web browsing, email, and any other network application. A captive portal will be displayed in the web browser prompting for registration and agent installation, similar to what you might see at a hotel or cafe. This web page will automatically load when opening a browser page to an unencrypted (http) website. Devices that have already been registered will not get a captive portal, or any other network disruption.

Shared Media, Hubs, VMs

Unmanaged (desktop) switches and hubs are not supported, and should not be installed on campus as they can create additional problems on the network. Ideally, each wired connection should be plugged directly into the wall. If additional data connections are needed, please contact telephone services.

If you have an unmanaged switch or hub with multiple devices connected, you will need each device to be registered in order for normal network access for any devices connected to that switch.

If you have a VM on your desktop (such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion), you will want to register each OS separately for normal use on the wired network. If one OS has an issue, the entire connection will be affected. For advanced users, it is possible to NAT the network connection to the VM, and not register each VM.
