An academic advisor assists prospective, new, transfer and continuing students throughout his/her education experience at Utah Valley University. Our advisors will help you create degree plans, assist in finding campus resources, purchasing credit, and career advising.

The Languages and Cultures advisors see students by Language or Degree with an appointment only. ** For an advisor to speak about or release student information via email or on the phone, a student must have a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Consent to Release Form on record in the Registrar's Office. FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How do I make an appointment? - Call the Department of Languages and Cultures Office at 801-863-8518 or email to make an appointment with your advisor.
  • Why do you only take appointments? - By taking appointments, our advisors can be sure they are there and are prepared for the meeting with you. If something comes up, we have your contact information so you don’t arrive at the advisor’s office and find our advisor not able to assist you.
  • What if I really just need to ask a quick question? - If you have a quick question, you can always send us an email or our office admins may be able to answer a general question you have. Occasionally we offer walk-in hours which is a first-come, first-service opportunity to talk – quick questions taking only 10-15 minutes at most. Otherwise, you will be asked to make an appointment. Call the office to ask when walk-in hours are offered (801-863-8518).
  • How often do you answer emails? - We answer email every day, and make a point of responding no later than three days after an email is sent. Sometimes you might get a response within ten minutes!
  • How soon can I make an appointment? - You can book appointments anywhere from 12 hours in advance to 3 weeks in advance. There are NO same day appointments.
  • What should I bring to my appointment? - Ideally, you should come prepared for your appointment by…
  • What if I’m late for my appointment? - If you’re more than ten minutes late, you might be told to reschedule. As your advisor, we will be there on time and prepared for you, and it is your responsibility and common courtesy to do the same in return.

How to Fulfill B.A. Language Requirement

If you have Minimal or no previous exposure to a foreign language:

If within the last five years you have had a class or experience with the following languages: ASL, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish you MUST meet with the specified Language Placement faculty member for a placement interview to determine which 1000-2000 level class is appropriate. Complete the lower division classes in order – 1010, 1020, 2010 & 202G.

If you have Minimal or no previous exposure to a foreign language:

If you have extensive experience with a language other than English 3050 is for students who have spent at least 1.5 years in a non-English speaking country or area (church service, extended study abroad, for example), bilingual, or native speakers (must be a domestic student). Passing with a “B-“or better allows the student the opportunity to purchase the 16 lower division credit hours. It is not necessary to purchase the credits to fulfill the B.A. Language Requirement. Passing the 3050 class will automatically fulfill it. Many students find it helpful to purchase the credits in order to fill in extra lower division elective credits. OR Pass a language proficiency test (University of Utah’s Placement Test or BYU’s Foreign Language Achievement Testing service (FLATS) proctored at the UVU Testing Center.

Programs may require “standard proficiency” or “advanced proficiency” in a language. Students can demonstrate proficiency in one of the following ways:

  • Language Classes: Undergraduate and graduate courses taken within the past six years may be used to demonstrate a language proficiency. Students must include school transcripts as documented proof (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Standard Proficiency: Complete a second-semester language course (1020), or the equivalent at another institution
  • Advanced Proficiency: Complete a fourth-semester language course (202G), or equivalent at another institution
  • Language Test: One of the following language tests taken within the past six years may be used to demonstrate a language proficiency. Student must include test results as documented proof.
  • The University of Utah Department of World Languages and Cultures Placement Test. Languages offered: Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Available at UVU Testing Center. Cost is $17.00.
  • The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The OPI is a live 30-45 minutes conversation, between a trained, certified ACTFL tester and the candidate. Cost is $139.00.
  • FLATS (Foreign Language Achievement Testing Service) through BYU; can be administered at UVU Testing Center. Cost is $50.00 and only can be used to purchase 12 lower division credits.
  • Native Speaker: Native Speakers of a language other than English must attach documented proof. One of the following forms of documentation may be used to demonstrate a language proficiency.
  • Visa, passport, citizenship or residency card from native country
  • Diploma from a foreign high school or university
  • The country's official language must be the same as the student's native language in order to use this option. If you are bilingual or spoke a second language at home in an English speaking country, you must demonstrate proficiency through advanced classes or a foreign language examination.

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Encourage, support and guide students as they define and develop realistic goals and make progress toward educational plans.
  • Effectively communicate and help students navigate the curriculum and graduation requirements as well as university academic policies and procedures.
  • Assist students in understanding the purpose and goals of higher education and its effects on their lives and personal goals.
  • Assist students in working closely with their professors and refer to appropriate university sources and available services as assistance is needed.
  • Assist students in gaining decision making skills and skills in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements.

Advisee (Student) Responsibilities - What your advisor can expect

  • Schedule regular appointments or make regular contacts with advisor during each semester.
  • Give notice in advance if you need to reschedule or cancel any advising appointments.
  • Come prepared to actively participate in each advisement session by bringing questions, concerns, or materials for discussion.
  • Develop an educational plan for successfully achieving goals; select courses each semester to progress toward fulfilling that educational plan.
  • Enroll in the courses for which you and your advisor have determined that, from educational objectives, you are ready to pursue.
  • Become knowledgeable, as a student, about college programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete all assignments or recommendations from your advisor. Use campus resources and services to assist in achieving academic, personal and career goals.
  • Accept responsibility for decisions.
