What Is a Leave of Absence?
A Leave of Absence is a period of time when a student is not enrolled in classes but typically intends to re-enroll. We understand that other things may come up for students; reasons can include studying abroad, medical conditions, death in the family, or other emergencies.
When Should I Take Leave?
You may consider a Leave of Absence if:
When Can I Take Leave?
You can submit a leave of absence form at any time. We recommended starting a leave of absence before the “Last Day to Drop” deadline. Please check deadlines here.
How Long Can My Leave Last?
You can take a leave for 7 semesters (Includes summer semester).
If you return later than 7 semesters from the last time you attended classes (includes summer semesters), you may be required to re-apply for admission and pay an additional re-admission fee.
What if I'm An International Student?
All international students must speak with International Student Services located in the Liberal Arts Building (LA 114) or call 801.863.8778 before making any changes to their enrollment to see how it may impact their visa status.
What if I'm a Veteran?
Submitting an LOA may impact your VA benefits. Contact the Military-Affiliated Student Hub at 801.863.8212 before making any changes to your enrollment status.
How Do I Cancel My Leave of Absence?
The leave of absence does not require cancellation if you plan to not take a leave after all, or if you are returning earlier than planned.
If you return later than 7 semesters from the last time you attended classes (includes summer semesters), you may be required to re-apply for admission and pay an additional re-admission fee.
What if I'm a Graduate Student?
All graduate students should meet with their Graduate Studies team and Program Director to take a leave of absence from UVU so as not to jeopardize your place in the grad program.
If you're returning after 7 semesters or more (including summers), you may need to submit another application to the university.
