Fall 2020 Welcome from Fulton Library Director

" "The fall semester always brings a sense of excitement for a new year full of opportunities ahead. We look forward to the hustle-bustle of students back on campus, and the energy that returns after the slower summer months. This fall is no different, but we also see many challenges that also need to be addressed.

We have adjusted most of the library’s operation since March to keep the Fulton Library’s doors open, while also protecting the health of our students and staff. As we prepare for fall, you’ll notice a few differences in how we will be doing our part to keep everyone safe:

  • Services are modified to maintain safety. Checking out books is now contactless, and all items checked in are quarantined for 72 hours, as current data recommends. Research help from librarians and instruction will be available virtually.
  • Face coverings will protect everyone in the library. We also have a limited supply we can give to patrons upon request at the circulation desk.
  • Digital materials help us provide equitable access to all students. As more classes move to a virtual environment, we will rely more heavily on our expansive electronic resources for research materials. Articles are available to read online through OneSearch or numerous other databases. We offer a large collection of streaming videos, and we will assist faculty in finding titles to include in Canvas. Many ebooks are also available, and we will emphasize ebooks for our book purchases this year.
  • Technology is available to support student learning with the addition of a laptop checkout program, webcams, and headphones checked out for the full semester. However, other equipment is not currently available for check out and will return when we can do so safely.
  • Changes to the setup in our building will help keep students studying here safe. Although floors 3-5 were closed for the summer, these floors will reopen for the fall semester. Furniture has been removed and/or rearranged, and the group study rooms and family study room will remain closed to maintain distancing requirements.
  • Computers in the building have been reduced to allow for spacing between users.
  • Cleanliness is emphasized. Wipe dispensers and hand sanitization stations will be available throughout the building. Patrons are encouraged to clean workspaces before and after each use. Staff will also be cleaning hard surfaces regularly.
  • Directional traffic will encourage social distancing in the building. Entrances have been marked as Enter and Exit Only, and the stairwells are now directional for up and down traffic.
  • See our Library Operations in Response to COVID-19 page for the most up-to-date information.

Although the Fulton Library may look and operate a little differently than we have in previous years, our goal of supporting student learning remains the same. We are here to help and look forward to it!
