Virtual Research Appointments

" "In a normal academic year, we have a librarian at the reference desk on the library’s first floor to provide research help to students who come into the library. In a normal academic year, our librarians teach more than 500 instruction sessions. We teach hundreds of students in ENGL 1010, ENGL 2010, and other classes how to find information for research papers. In a normal year, librarians are also able to help students wandering in our bookshelves who aren’t sure where to find the books they need. Social distancing has made it a lot harder for us to reach students who have library and research questions.

While we can’t meet literally face-to-face, we can meet virtually face-to-face with virtual librarian appointments! We librarians can help you with all of the things we normally do in our face-to-face meetings, including:

  • Brainstorming and workshopping topic ideas,
  • Developing search strategies,
  • Using the library databases and online resources,
  • Evaluating sources for credibility,
  • Citing sources, and
  • Answer questions about using the library and its services.

To make an appointment with a librarian, use the Appointments link under the Ask a Librarian section of the library’s homepage. All librarians in the scheduler have their subject specialties listed next to our names. If you’re not sure which librarian to choose, you can browse our list of Subject Librarians.

We use WebEx and Teams to host online meetings with students. After scheduling an appointment, you’ll receive an email with information on joining the virtual appointment. For best results, make sure you have a microphone on or hooked up to your computer and a solid internet connection.
