Laptops, Webcams, and Headphones Available for Check Out to Support Remote Learning

" "With the approach of fall semester, we wanted to share some changes that have occurred with the equipment collection here at the Fulton Library. To help keep library visitors and employees safe and healthy during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, we have limited equipment checkouts for the foreseeable future to only equipment considered essential for supporting remote learning.

Equipment for Students

The library has limited numbers of the following equipment available for currently enrolled students to check out for the semester.

  • Laptops: In cooperation with several other departments on campus, the library has a number of PC laptops and Chromebooks. All have built-in webcams and microphones.
  • Headphones: We have several types of over-the-ear headphones to choose from, including some with built-in microphones.
  • Webcams: Allows for live streaming or video capturing of presentations.

Equipment for Instructors

The library has limited numbers of the following equipment available for instructors to check out for the semester.

  • Document Cameras: Best for live streaming or video capturing of three-dimensional objects and documents. Some models can be used in lieu of a webcam, but that is not their primary intended purpose.
  • Webcams: Best for live streaming or video capturing of presentations.

Procedures for Checking Out Equipment

Our equipment collection is relatively small and is available on a strict first-come, first-served basis. To check out equipment, go to the Circulation Desk on the library’s first floor and bring your UVID card. Students in need of a laptop should fill out the Laptop Checkout Form online, prior to coming to the library.

In the past, we have relied on short checkout periods and frequent turnaround to meet heavy demand of equipment. This is no longer a viable strategy in the circumstances we now find ourselves. Students and instructors checking out remote learning equipment may keep the items through the end of fall semester.

We have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing possible ways that we can continue to offer our full equipment collection, but we have been unable to identify a way to effectively sanitize the equipment and reduce interpersonal interactions. We will revisit this issue as the COVID-19 situation begins to improve.
