How to Find Plays

Literature, including plays, is organized by original language and publication date in the UVU Library’s collection, so finding a play without the title or author can be tricky. The following methods can be used to quickly locate plays and monologues.

Use a Guide

These guides include excerpts from contemporary plays or short summaries of plays that can be used to select just the right monologue.

More monologue books can be found using OneSearch (on the Library's homepage) by using the keyword “monologues” and limiting the search to print books.

  • 50/50 Monologues for Student Actors: 100 Monologues for Guys and Girls / Mary Depner
  • PN2080 .D465 2011, 4th Floor
  • More Scenes and Monologs from the Best New Plays: An Anthology of New Dramatic Writing from Professional Produced Plays / Roger Ellis
  • PN2080 .M675 2007, 4th Floor
  • Ultimate Scene and Monologue Book: An Actor’s Guide to Over 1,000 Monologues and Scenes from More than 300 Contemporary Plays / Ed Hooks
  • PN2080 H66 2007, 4th Floor

Use Drama Online

Drama Online has an advanced search that can narrow down plays by setting, genre, theme, or time period. (The advanced search link can be found under the basic search button.) Many plays are available directly from this database; others can be found in the Library’s collection using OneSearch.

Search the Library's Catalog format

It is possible to search just the Library’s catalog for copies of plays we have in print. This method will find all plays, from Greek tragedies through contemporary theatre. Please not that there is no single play section; plays can be found throughout the literature section.

To search for plays in the Library’s catalog:

  1. Go to catalog.
  2. Click Advanced Search.
  3. Put a space in the search box and limit the search by Collection to Plays.

...or by publisher.

Samuel French and Dramatists Play Service are two major publishers of contemporary play scripts. Search for the phrase “Samuel French” or “Dramatists Play Service” in OneSearch and limit to “print books” to find titles from this publisher.
