The following information is designed to help CE Instructors and others interested
parties to understand the policies, duties, requirements of those teaching concurrent
enrollment mathematics and statistics courses through UVU. With this information we
hope to ensure CE course quality and consistency.
All CE Instructors are required to follow UVU departmental policies/practices for
the classes they teach. They will use common course syllabi that outline UVU policies
for consistency. For an example of a basic Course outline see http://www.uvu.edu/math/ and click on the course resources tab.

for consistency. For an example of a basic Course outline see http://www.uvu.edu/math/ and click on the course resources tab.
- All CE courses must adhere to UVU CE requirements and USHE agreements. They must also
follow accreditation guidelines and mandates. For example:
- CE courses are to be as close to College courses as possible.
- From USHE agreement, courses must be 17-week courses.
- Levels of supervision for less qualified instructors are driven by USHE (Utah System
of Higher Education) agreements
For documents relating to UVU Mathematics CE agreements see
http://www.uvu.edu/math/
- All CE Instructors should attend regular training meetings. In these meetings we hope
to foster consistency and quality. These meetings will be a venue to share ideas and
problems as well as disperse information.
- All CE classes, regardless of instructor qualification, will use a common final exam
created by UVU faculty and CE Instructors. UVU Adjunct Faculty will use these same
exams for their classes. Instructors will grade their own final exams. (Note: All
CE instructors are encouraged to participate in the creation of unit and final exams.)
- UVU will have a Liaison that works directly with CE Instructors. The Liaison will
provide training and support for CE Instructors, visit CE classrooms, ensure consistency
in testing and grading, and evaluate new CE Instructor applications.
- There will be three levels of CE Instructor qualification. With each comes a different
level of UVU supervision (as suggested by House Bill 182). The CE Liaison will evaluate
the qualifications of Instructors. Any appeals to qualification evaluations will be
reviewed by the UVU Mathematics Department. These levels are as follows:
- Level 1: CE Instructors in this level have a Master’s degree in Math or Math Education with
18 semester credits of graduate level mathematics courses. They will create and grade
their own unit exams.
- Level 2: CE instructors in this level have a Mathematics Endorsement 4, and a Master’s degree
in Math or Math Education with some graduate mathematics coursework (but less than
18 semester credits). This group of instructors will create and grade their own unit
exams. The Liaison will review and approve unit exams prior to use. The Liaison will
also spot check grading.
- Level 3: CE Instructors in this group will have a Mathematics Endorsement 4. The Liaison will
be the instructor of record for courses taught by instructors in this level until
CE Instructors move to one of the other levels of qualification. UVU proctored exams
(unit exams and the final exam) will be supplied to this group. These instructors
will grade their own exams with grading spot checked by the Liaison.
- CE Instructors may move up in qualification level through completion of degrees/graduate
level course work. UVU will supply graduate level courses for those desiring to increase
qualification level.
- New CE Instructors, regardless of qualification level, will be supervised at the level
3 qualification for the first year to become familiar with college standards and expectations.
After the probationary period they will be supervised at their qualification level.
- A UVU committee, comprised of UVU faculty and CE High School faculty, will be maintained.
This committee will have input into UVU Math CE policy and procedures, review the
CE program, and review complaints.
- CE instructors may be put on probation by (i) not following all policies and practices
for the courses they teach, (ii) by failing to demonstrate required knowledge and
quality of teaching. If an instructor is put on probation, the Liaison will give them
sufficient time to show satisfactory improvement. They may be more highly supervised
during probation. If satisfactory improvement is not met in the time given, then approval
to teach CE courses may be retracted. Any probation decisions may be appealed. All
appeals will be reviewed by the UVU Mathematics department.
- All UVU CE courses should be limited to only students who are registered for CE credit
(this follows University policy). Students who are not registered and who are not
prepared for the first exam should not be allowed to register late. All exceptions
must be approved through the UVU CE office and the Math department Liaison.
- Instructors of CE Math courses are expected to use UVU Canvas even if they primarily
use another system for their classes. The Liaison can help set up a basic working
Canvas course and will provide basic training.
