Mathematics degrees allow for a wide variety of employment options. The following careers are very mathematics centered, though in many cases additional training beyond a mathematics degree (or at least beyond a B.S. Mathematics degree) is needed to qualify for employment in these fields: actuarial work, education, research analysis, cryptology, systems analysis, robotics engineering, design modeling (creating cost efficient models), geomatics engineering, photogrammatism, stock trading, biomathematics, accounting or auditing, population ecology, aspects of forensic analysis and some types of computer programming design. There are also jobs for mathematics graduates in the federal government, mainly in the department of defense. The degree required depends on the type of job in the areas mentioned, and the salary level.
Following are the key knowledge, skill and ability goals of the B.S. Mathematics program:
The Secondary Education – Mathematics major is designed for students who plan to teach Mathematics at middle, junior or high school level or for graduate studies in the field. The degree will prepare students to become state certified to teach the subject at any secondary level and help to address shortages of secondary math educators in Utah. Graduates will not only understand the art of teaching but also have a deep content knowledge of Mathematics. Graduates of this program are able to accurately interpret and translate pictorial and descriptive information into mathematical statements; solve problems quantitatively and communicate results clearly; demonstrate understanding of numeric, algebraic and geometric reasoning; and, demonstrate computational skills in areas of applied mathematics.

Mathematics Teaching Today, NCTM 2010
The Mathematics Education, B.S. at Utah Valley University prepares students for careers as mathematics teachers from seventh through twelfth grade by providing both a strong foundation in mathematical content and hands-on experience in the classroom. The program emphasizes content knowledge, problem solving, curriculum development, lesson and unit planning, the use of technology, and the evaluation of student knowledge. The program stresses the teaching philosophies of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), knowledge students then put into practice in teaching experiences supervised by highly qualified teachers.

The Department of Mathematics is pleased to offer a B.S. degree in Statistics. Statisticians assist in the collection and analysis of data thus providing decision makers information on which to base decisions. Knowledge of statistics and data handling helps students in almost every discipline. There are many opportunities in the job market for students with a degree in Statistics, and the program is ideal as preparation for a graduate degree in Statistics in any major university. The degree offers a wide variety of applied and theoretical courses in statistics, including statistical computing using both SAS and R programming.

AA Degree in Mathematics
AS Degree in Mathematics
The AA and AS mathematics programs are intended to prepare students for the pursuit of a bachelor's degree. Those intending to transfer to other institutions should check transferability of courses with the institutions to which they intend to transfer. Following are the key knowledge, skill and ability goals of the AA and AS mathematics program:
Graduate Certificate in Mathematics
The Graduate Certificate in Mathematics program aims to improve mathematics education and student achievement by focusing on two specific research-supported areas. First, high-quality content-based knowledge is critical to student achievement. And second, dual-credit/dual-enrollment students are more likely to persist in college and are more likely to complete a Bachelor’s degree in less time than those who did not attempt college credits in high school.
Utah Valley University Mathematics Department, propose to provide a one-two year course of study for secondary-level teachers leading to a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics. The program is intended for 1) students who are holders of a Master’s degree in a discipline other than mathematics, and who wish to teach concurrent enrollment or college courses, and 2) students who wish to prepare for admission to graduate studies at Utah Valley University or another college/university, in anticipation of a Master’s Degree of Science in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.
The objective is to provide curricula in mathematics which will meet the present and future needs of all participants and supports evidence that shows that good teachers make a clear difference in student achievement and that the importance of teacher quality cannot be overstated. More importantly, evidence suggests that teacher quality is the “most important school factor in explaining differences in student performance (Goldhaber, 2002), even compared to the effects of changes in class size, the socio-economics characteristics of students or the level of education of parents (Clotfelter, Ladd, & L., Teacher Credentials and Student Achievement: longitudinal analysis with student fixed effects, 2007).
Graduate courses for this program will be available to match in-service teacher’s schedules, evenings and during summer sessions, taught by Utah Valley University full-time faculty.
Furthermore, the program is designed to give secondary mathematics teachers breadth and depth in mathematics and statistics. We anticipate that these teachers’ enhanced content knowledge will not only help students become “college and career ready” but will have the added benefit of increased student achievement in subsequent mathematics courses at the College or University level.
Admittance to UVU’s Graduate Program requires a $45 Admissions fee paid to Cashiers office and the following Admissions form filled out and taken to the Admissions office.

The Graduate Certificate in Mathematics aims to improve mathematics education and student achievement by focusing on two specific research-supported areas. First, by delivering high-quality content-based knowledge critical to student achievement, and second, targeting in-service teachers who desire to teach dual credit in high school, given that dual-credit/dual-enrollment students are more likely to persist in college and are more likely to complete a Bachelor’s degree in less time than those who did not attempt college credits in high school. Graduate courses for this program will be available to match in-service teacher’s schedules, evenings and during summer sessions, taught on the main campus and live-interactive by Utah Valley University’s full-time faculty.
The mathematics minor can be combined with a variety of degrees throughout the university. Following are the key knowledge, skill and ability goals of the Math Minor program:
