What is Structured Learning Assistance?

Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is a specialized class with a required workshop component. The class is composed of regular course lectures and two hours per week of facilitator-led workshops which have a mandatory attendance requirement. The workshop focuses on study skills and test-taking strategies specific to the course content, as well as providing assistance with understanding course concepts.

Please note that the SLA workshops which are assigned to the accelerated MAT 1010/ MATH 1050 combined classes are designed to help students with the rigorous workload associated with this course combination. Students in the combined classes should expect 2-4 hours of homework per day, in addition to the 2 lecture hours per day.

Who should participate in SLA?

Anyone who wants to proactively raise their math course grades and will attend the 2 hours per week workshop designed to support student success should participate.

Why register for an SLA section?

SLA offers students reinforcement of course content and understanding through structured workshop activities, conducted by the facilitator, who designs the workshops in close association with the instructor.

SLA sections are a tremendous value:

  • Collaborative learning activities

  • Study skills for success in learning mathematics

  • Increased concept mastery
