Robert’s PhD is in American Studies, the interdisciplinary examination of American literature, history, and culture. He researches and teaches colonial and nineteenth-century American literature; areas of particular interest include captivity narratives, slave narratives, and the role of literary texts in the construction and deconstruction of national identity and public memory. He also is interested in innovative pedagogical approaches, such as hybrid delivery, which he both employs and critically examines in his composition classes.

Robert joined the UVU faculty in 1998. He served as Chair of the English & Literature Department from 2006-2012. He currently serves as Assistant Chair and Scheduler for the Department.
