Summer Valente graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor of arts in humanities, with an emphasis in philosophy. During her undergraduate studies she spent some significant time in Brazil which sparked her passion for community development, civic engagement, and the nonprofit sector. Summer then earned a master’s degree in public administration from the Romney Institute of Public Management at BYU. During her graduate studies she spent time abroad in Ghana and Mozambique, focusing on international development and research. 

After graduation, Summer started her nonprofit career at United Way of Utah County. She began as a Business Relations Manager, managing 80 corporate relationships and workplace giving campaigns, as well as participating in various other fundraising projects.

She then became the Community Engagement Director, directing both the Volunteer Center and 2-1-1 Information and Referral line. She oversall all volunteer activities associated with United Way of Utah County, including Day of Caring, Sub for Santa, Summer of Service, an AmeriCorps*VISTA project, and other coporate volunteer projects. Her work with 2-1-1 included maintaining the information database, facilitating community outreach, and coordinating with local, state, and national partners.

Summer's final position at United Way of Utah County was Chief Operating Officer, working closely with the CEO as she led department team leaders in the development of new strategices, initiatives, and organizational capacity, including a new education initative called EveryDay Learners. She developed needed resources, including securing a $60,000 grant and working to pass a piece of legislation that provided ongoing funding for the 2-1-1 service. She oversaw human resource activities, including recruiting, hiring, training, and development of staff, and provided continued development and expansion of the Volunteer Center and 2-1-1 Information and Referral program.

Summer currently serves as the director of Volunteer & Service-Learning at Utah Valley University. She loves working with students to create a space for critical thinking, reflection, and action on social justice issues. She is a champion of student leadership and believes in the power of students to change their world.
