Adrienne A. Winans received her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University with her dissertation “Race, Space, and Gender: Re-mapping Chinese America from the Margins, 1875-1943.”  She holds a M.A. in World History from New York University and a B.A. in History and Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago.

She is currently working on her book project, tentatively titled Marital Choices: Mapping Race, Space, and Gender in Chinese America, 1875-1943, which examines Chinese immigrant and Chinese American women’s negotiations with the gatekeeping state during the era of Chinese exclusion.  Applying an intersectional lens and reading archival INS files against the grain, this history of women as transnational students and as part of mixed-race families helps remap a Chinese America beyond the West Coast

With Judy Tzu-Chun Wu, she is the co-author of “Not Adding and Stirring: Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality History and the Transformation of Asian America” in The Oxford Handbook of Asian American History.

Each Fall and Spring semester, she teaches History 2710: U.S. History since 1877.  Her upper-division course offerings include History 3733: U.S. History since 1945, History 321G: Women in American History since 1870 GI, History 3010: The Historian's Craft, the Senior Thesis capstone (History 4980 & 4990), and Special Topics courses on U.S. Immigration and The U.S. in the Pacific World.
