Advising Philosophy

As an academic advisor, I am committed to guiding my students towards excellence and achievement of their educational and career goals. Each student has a unique path that they will take, all have the potential for success, and many make great sacrifices to prioritize their education. My job is to empower these students through engaged advising sessions and to reach out through proactive advising. Engaged learning should not only be happening in the classroom, but in the academic advising offices as well.

Students are distinct learners and should be treated as such. Though aspirations or barriers may be shared between students, each will require and deserve individualized advisement, as each student will have individual reactions and understandings.

Above all, integrity is crucial as we set an example for our students. Identity development is part of the collegiate curriculum each student will absorb while attending an institution. I refer to Arthur Chickering’s Seven Vectors of student development: developing competence, managing emotions, moving through autonomy toward interdependence, developing mature interpersonal relationships, establishing identity, developing purpose, and developing integrity. Each interaction with a student should nurture an environment that contributes to these vectors or tasks.

I strive to provide an inviting office that cultivates individual growth for the students that I have the opportunity to work with. I believe in their success, and look forward to providing the resources that aid in this success.
