Professor

Dr. Peterson is a Professor in the School of Education at Utah Valley University. She specializes in teaching in the areas of Language Arts & Children's Writing, Children's and Young Adult Literature & Nonfiction Literature in the Classroom, and Differentiated Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to her tenure at Utah Valley she taught one year at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and adjunct courses for Old Dominion University. She is co-founder and co-chair of UVU’s Forum on Engaged Reading. Her professional experience was teaching Kindergarten, 4th and 6th grades, and K-6th music and art in public schools in Utah, Arizona and Texas prior to her graduate degrees. In 2011-12, Peterson was a visiting professor at the University of Virginia, associated with the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning, investigating the Responsive Classroom Approach.

Dr. Peterson's areas of emphasis include: Academic diversity and social and emotional complexities in elementary classrooms, encouraging diverse models of instruction in K-16; Language Arts, including developmental stage spelling approaches and writing instruction in elementary classrooms; Children's literature, with ongoing focus in nonfiction as support for the Common Core.

Educational Background

Dr. Peterson has an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with minors in Gifted Education and Counseling Education from the University of Virginia. She is licensed K-8 and holds a Gifted Education Endorsement. She also holds a B.S. in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Old Dominion University.
