Wind Symphony in Concert

7:00 p.m. Concert Hall Music School of the Arts

A wind symphony provides all voices from a traditional orchestra using only wind and percussion instruments. That is, there are no string sections: violins, violas, and cellos. This is done by adding many more brass and woodwind players and percussionists playing both pitched and rhythm instruments. The sound of a wind symphony is unique. Some feel it has the characteristic sound of a large and powerful pipe organ. Yet the music is an artistically combined sound. Individual musicians intone their own separate "pipes" and percussionists create sounds striking a wide variety of instruments. This carefully blended interpretation breathes life into the composer's work, which in turn communicates in a way that only fine music can. Enjoy UVU’s Wind Symphony for a unique classical music experience.

dialogue on inclusion

Wed, April 3

Dialogue on Inclusion:

Beauty and the Beast: A Dialogue on Western and Non-Western Aesthetics

3:00 p.m. Microsoft Teams School of the Arts

The philosophy of ‘beauty’ and ‘aesthetics’ in western arts goes back to Greek philosopher Aristotle, while the 18th-century art historian Winckelmann’s appreciation of Greek naturalism and ideal beauty concepts defined the western sense of aesthetics for many centuries to come. While Winckelmann and his contemporaries were fully aware of non-western cultural traditions, they hardly ever bothered to test the cross-cultural validity of the concept of ‘beauty’ elsewhere other than Europe.

This event contemplates on historical examples from Mesopotamia, Japan, and Africa where ‘beautiful’ is not even a valid category of appreciation. It questions whether we can view non-Western artworks for the qualities attributed to them beyond beautiful, and whether we can appreciate the aesthetic appeal of objects without being obsessed with beauty.

Film Screening and Q&A with Dr. Roni Jo Draper

1:20 p.m.-2:20 p.m. Film Screening UVU Museum of Art

Fire Tender is a short film written, directed, and produced by Dr. Roni Jo Draper (Yurok), that tells the story of Yurok tribal members returning to traditional fire ways. Margo Robbins is a grandmother, cultural educator, healer, and Indigenous fire practitioner who is fighting for the Yurok Tribe’s return of fire sovereignty—the right to utilize fire for tribal land stewardship outlawed by settlers. Margo works to overturn one hundred years of environmentally devastating anti-fire policies that have put Yurok lands at risk and prevented access to the natural resources needed for clean water, foodstuff, and materials needed for traditional lifeways.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. Roni Jo Draper.
