Wind Symphony in Concert

7:00 p.m. Concert Hall Music School of the Arts

A wind symphony provides all voices from a traditional orchestra using only wind and percussion instruments. That is, there are no string sections: violins, violas, and cellos. This is done by adding many more brass and woodwind players and percussionists playing both pitched and rhythm instruments. The sound of a wind symphony is unique. Some feel it has the characteristic sound of a large and powerful pipe organ. Yet the music is an artistically combined sound. Individual musicians intone their own separate "pipes" and percussionists create sounds striking a wide variety of instruments. This carefully blended interpretation breathes life into the composer's work, which in turn communicates in a way that only fine music can. Enjoy UVU’s Wind Symphony for a unique classical music experience.

Diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank

By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett

7:30 p.m. 2:00 p.m. (Sat) Bastian Theatre Theatre School of the Arts

An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed factory attic, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. Anne's voice shines through each day of these two dark years: “When I write, I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death!”

We are pleased to offer ASL interpretation for the performance on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the TYE Center.

Content disclosure: Mild adult themes, historical references to the Holocaust and concentration camps, antisemitism, smoking, gunshot, bomb, and air raid sound effects, home invasion, mentions of suicide. The Saturday, Oct. 7 Matinee will be a sensory-friendly performance for all guests.

Just before Halloween, take a chance to dance on the wild side as three composers entangle with one of the most notable figures in storytelling—Death. This performance is part of our Masterworks Magnified series, designed to invite audiences to experience our music in new ways—with added elements like video projections and special lighting in the concert hall, conversations with the performers, and fun lobby activities on theme with the concert.

Machinal

Adaptation by lisa hall from Sophie Treadwell

7:30 p.m. Nov. 18, 2:00 p.m. (Sat) Bastian Theatre School of the Arts

A young woman feels helpless against the demands of society, relationships, and life. In the end, she is faced with a deadly decision and must deal with the consequences. Set against the realities of our technologically mediated lives, Machinal is a cautionary tale about the importance of true connection. A contemporary adaptation of Sophie Treadwell's early 20th-century impressionist masterpiece, this play follows a young woman who adheres to the rituals that society expects of a woman, however resistant she may feel about them. The production examines her life through an obligatory marriage, the complexities of motherhood, and the danger of an affair.

We are pleased to offer ASL interpretation for the performance on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the UVU Accessibility Office.

Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert

Attending a live symphonic concert is a feast for the senses. People love to be inspired and to share meaningful experiences together. Technology won't ever change that. The live experience provides so much more additional sensory stimulus than a recording. The sound is enveloping and rich. It arrives from so many different point sources. The intense concentration, physical involvement and interaction of the musicians with the soloists and conductors adds drama and heightens the emotional involvement. Most importantly the audience recognizes that their own participation as involved, active listeners is a vital component of the whole experience. Join The UVU Symphony and be inspired.
