Getting Veterans (GI Bill®) Benefits at UVU

General benefits information can be obtained at:
Web: www.gibill.va.gov
Phone: 1-888-442-4551 (1-888-GI Bill® 1)

NOTE: Some steps can be completed simultaneously.

STEP 1: APPLY TO UVU

Complete the online UVU Admissions Application and pay the application fee. After 48 hours, check your e-mail for your UVID and temporary password in order to access the myUVU student web portal. You will also obtain access to a student e-mail account. Note that all official UVU communication will be sent to the student e-mail address. Be sure to check it often.

A welcome packet with pertinent information will also be sent in the mail within one week of your acceptance to UVU. This packet will contain a Getting Started at UVU Checklist with additional steps which must be completed in order to register for classes at UVU.

STEP 2: SUBMIT OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

If courses were taken at another college/university or through the military (including JST, CCAF, DLI, DSST, CLEP, AP, etc.), send Official Transcripts to the UVU Admissions Office.

Transcripts must be submitted and evaluated prior to obtaining any VA certifications, even if you do not intend to use those classes at UVU. Your benefits may be discontinued until this information is received and evaluated by UVU. View UVU's Incoming Transfer Credit and Transfer FAQs web pages for detailed information.

STEP 3: KNOW YOUR VA CHAPTER

Chapter explanations are found on the VA's Official GI Bill® web page or on our Chapters page.

STEP 4: APPLY TO USE THE GI BILL® AT UVU

Complete a VA online application after completing the questionnaire at vets.gov. You do not need to wait to be admitted to UVU to apply for benefits. To view which application is required for your Chapter benefit, and to view helpful tips before applying, visit our Student Forms page.

* It can take 4-8 weeks for the VA to process your request for GI Bill® benefits. You will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (Form 22-0557) from the VA by mail once your request is accepted. You may continue to complete the remaining steps while waiting for the VA to process your application.

STEP 5: REGISTER FOR CLASSES

Complete UVU Orientation and meet with an academic advisor. Then, view the required courses for your degree using the Wolverine Track feature. Wolverine Track can be accessed via the myUVU student web portal. Finally, register for classes on the myUVU system.

STEP 6: SUBMIT REQUIRED FORMS

To view which forms are required for your Chapter benefit, visit the Student Forms page of this site. Submit the forms to the UVU Veteran Success Center and the VA according to the instructions on that page. Read all forms carefully. Note that the UVU Veteran Class Schedule Web Form is required every semester.

After the UVU Veteran Success Center receives ALL required forms, they will certify (submit) your UVU classes to the VA.

STEP 7: PAY TUITION

Arrangements will need to be made for payment of UVU Tuition and Fees by the deadline for the semester you are attending. Semester dates and deadlines can be viewed on the Student Timetables page.

If you are approved for the Post 9/11 GI Bill or the Vocational Rehabilitation program, you may obtain waivers to prevent courses being dropped or late fees if you submit all the required forms (per Step 6) before the deadlines.

Other tuition payment options:

  • UVU offers a Tuition Payment Plan to help spread out the cost of attendance.
  • The UVU Financial Aid Office provides scholarships, grants, short-term loans, etc. to aid in payment.
  • A Federal or State Tuition Assistance program may be available. Contact your Unit for more information. The Department of Defense will not authorize Federal Tuition Assistance for classes for which a student is also receiving benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve program (Chapter 1606) or the REAP Program (Chapter 1607).
  • The VA offers an Advance Pay option which releases benefits/payments prior to UVU payment deadlines.
  • UVU recognizes recipients of the Purple Heart with a Tuition Waiver option; however, student must still pay Fees and complete the Veterans Purple Heart Tuition Waiver Request Form found on our Student Forms page. The waiver covers up to 18 credits of Utah resident undergraduate tuition per semester, and/or up to $10,000 graduate tuition total (not per semester).
