These awards are presented by Utah Campus Compact and UVU Volunteer & Service-Learning Center to recognize the work of outstanding faculty, staff, students, and community organizations on a statewide and institutional level who are excelling in community engagement, service-learning, and volunteerism.

Recipients of the awards were honored at the UVU Volunteer & Service-Learning Center Recognition & Appreciation Luncheon on April 10, 2017. There was a $250.00 cash prize for each award winner. Nomination for Christine Diamond:  Christine graduated in 2012 with a degree in Business Management and emphases in both International Business and Spanish. She was very busy during her studies and graduated as part of the Honors program, the Service Scholar program, and the Center for the Advancement of Leadership aka, the CAL program.

She also found time to do research and participate in the SIFE/Enactus club, where she traveled to regional competitions to present on some amazing social entrepreneurship/innovation projects. Christine now works as a Project Coordinator at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Her work focuses on raising funds and awareness for local children’s hospitals across the country and continues her commitment to bettering the community.

On Why She is Engaged in her Community:  “Because of my concern for others, and the great service opportunities I had at UVU, I am now working at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals as a project coordinator helping support three of our fundraising programs. I thoroughly enjoy raising funds and awareness for local children's hospitals across the country."

Nomination for Leonard Bagalwa:  Leonard began the Utah Community Refugee Partnership Center just two years ago and in that time has provided services to many of Utah County's refugees. He has provided many opportunities for my students to serve in his office and work with refugees. Leonard is a refugee himself and is able to relate to and provide a unique service to the refugees in this area. He helps them gets jobs, fill out applications, find housing, and provides support for them. As he does this, he includes my students wherever he can.

On Why He is Engaged in his Community:  “Myself as a refugee, I know what it means to be a refugee in this country. Refugees are people who lost everything they had before they came to United States and that's the number one reason why I am engaged to help refugees successfully integrate by educating the refugee community. Please allow me to say thank you again for this opportunity and thank you to those who nominated me and supported my nomination.”

Nomination for Phil Schwartz:  Phil has served as a staff advisor for the Volunteer & Service-Learning Center Alternative Break trips for two years. This includes attending multiple pre-trip meetings, supporting the students in their planning, and making sure all UVU policies are being kept during the trip.  Phil connects so well with the students and they love working with him. He does a fantastic job of balancing his roles of advisor and participant, and truly allows the students to have the leadership opportunities that they are seeking as Alt Break trip leaders.

 Some of the social issues addressed during an alternative break trip can be challenging to face, and vulnerability is often required on many levels. Phil’s positive, inspiring attitude allowed the students to be authentic and feel supported throughout the entire experience. It was so nice to know that the students were in great hands and we are grateful for his service

On Why He is Engaged in his Community:  "The Volunteer & Service-Learning Center has made it easy for me to find and access service opportunities in the community. I have found immense satisfaction in these opportunities! I love the UVU community and am grateful to serve alongside such wonderful students and staff.”

Nomination for Brandon Hayes:  Brandon was a program director for our alternative weekend break trip to Salt Lake City. We had never done this before, so despite having nothing to go off of, Brandon helped to make this trip a huge success. He took the time requisite to find volunteers, figure out logistics, and plan for this trip in just a few short months. Following the trip, he started being a Program Director for XCEL. Not only does he fulfill his position requirements, he also helps with every other event the service council does. He is excited about service and volunteering to help those around him. Brandon always has a positive attitude, and is team-oriented. He wants everyone to win and encourages everyone around him. 

On Why He is Engaged in his Community:  “After I went on the Alternative Break last year, there was a fire that was lit and I just haven't stopped serving. It has become a part of me. I love being able to see people smile and being able to brighten someone’s day in some sort of way.”

Nomination for Dr. Steven Emerman:  Dr. Steven Emerman has been a member of the UVU SL Committee for nearly 10 years. He previously completed the Service-Learning Faculty Fellowship and this year is a recipient of both the UVU Community-based Research Scholar in Residence Award and the GEL High Impact Community Partnership Matching Grant. Dr. Emerman is committed to the service-learning pedagogy in his environmental management and hydrology classes, where students each semester apply their newly acquired water management skills outside the classroom to save hundreds of thousands of dollars for Utah Valley municipalities and businesses.

On Why He is Engaged in his Community:  “Undergraduate students are an underappreciated resource for the solution of environmental and social problems. My Environmental Management students have had a significant impact, including a monetary impact, on the non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private businesses that have collaborated with us.”
