GroupWise
The official e-mail/collaboration system for faculty and staff is Novell GroupWise.  In addition to normal internal and Internet e-mail functions, GroupWise provides calendaring, task management, and contact management capabilities.  The GroupWise account name for each person is his/her UV ID and the password is the UVLink password.

Documentation for the GroupWise 7 Windows client can be found here:  http://www.novell.com/documentation/gw7/pdfdoc/gw7_userwin/gw7_userwin.pdf

LinkMail
Employees of UVU are provided a free LinkMail web-based e-mail account.  LinkMail is accessed from the Home tab in the UVLink web portal.  You can access your LinkMail account from GroupWise - see instructions in LinkMail.

Online help is available within LinkMail.

Accounts & Addresses
As soon as anyone is hired by UVU, a GroupWise account and a UVLink/LinkMail account for him/her are automatically created.  The default e-mail address for your GroupWise account is your UV ID followed by @uvu.edu.  We recommend you follow the instructions below to change this default address as soon as possible.  The e-mail address for your LinkMail account is your UV ID followed by @uvlink.uvu.edu.  The LinkMail e-mail address cannot be changed.

GroupWise Account Setup and Options
UVU strongly suggests that your GroupWise e-mail address be changed from your UV ID to something more meaningful.  Several options are available for you to chose from.  In addition, other helps and options are available to help you get setup just the way you want to.  Please visit http://myemail.uvu.edu to change your address and learn more.

Alternate Access to Your GroupWise Account
We suggest giving GroupWise a try if you aren't familiar, as it is a full-featured, very capable system.  While most employees use the GroupWise Windows Client, others aren't able or prefer other e-mail programs.  If you use a Mac or Linux, GroupWise clients are available for those platforms as well.  Other methods for accessing your GroupWise Account include GroupWise WebAccess (a web-based GroupWise client), and POP/IMAP.  Use http://www.uvu.edu/email to login to WebAccess.  Settings for POP/IMAP are listed below:

IMAP4 server:  GWIMAP4.UVU.EDU
POP3 server:  GWPOP3.UVU.EDU
SMTP (sending server):  GWSMTP.UVU.EDU
  • Authentication is required to send messages.
  • SSL is currently not supported, but we hope to support it soon.
LDAP server (Address Book):  161.28.100.177
  • Port:  389
  • Search Base:  ou=users,o=uvu
  • Scope:  Subtree
  • Authentication is not needed
  • SSL is not used
  • Self-signed certificates are not used

E-Mail Firewall
UVU's E-mail firewall and other security infrastructure protect all UVU e-mail accounts.  The firewall creates an account for you as soon as it sees the first suspicious message addressed to you.   When the firewall account is created, you will receive a message in your e-mail account which gives you access to check on the quarantined message(s).  This first message also contains your password for the firewall.    You should change your firewall password as soon as possible to something you will remember.  You can access the quarantine from the http://www.uvu.edu/email page at any time by providing your e-mail address and firewall password.  In the future, when messages are quarantined, you'll receive a Quarantine Summary message with a link to check the quarantine (but not your password).

A users guide for the firewall is available here: http://www.barracudanetworks.com/ns/downloads/barracuda_usersguide.pdf

E-Mail to Students
All official e-mail from UVU to students will be sent to their LinkMail account.  It is recommended that all interactions between instructors and students is sent to student's LinkMail accounts also.  Each instructor may decide which e-mail account (GroupWise or LinkMail) he/she uses to send to students.  It is recommended that only UVU accounts be used for UVU related communication.

Another method of communicating with students is the BlackBoard Vista system, which includes an e-mail component that is closed, meaning that e-mails don't enter or leave the Vista system from/to the Internet.

Communication with an entire class of students is enabled through UVLink.  On various class lists, a link is provided to e-mail the class.  This method requires that your GroupWise or other e-mail client is set up correctly for this type of interaction.  Contact the HelpDesk if you have questions or trouble.
