Utah is well known for being a family-oriented state, but more efforts and initiatives can be implemented to help Utah women and girls thrive in greater measure. This spoke is focused on healthy relationships and equal partnerships in home and family. A particular focus is in the areas of decision making and action taking, caregiving responsibilities, domestic and emotional labor, communication, and healthy sexuality. An important objective of this spoke is to encourage and support women and girls as individuals and in all types of families.

Bold Vision & Goals

To make Utah a place where more girls and women can thrive, the Home & Family spoke leaders and partners have crafted the vision and goals below. Spoke leadership and UWLP team members are currently working to collect baseline data that will assist in adding numbers to the changes we want to see by 2026 and 2030.

Vision: To ensure that all girls and women thrive in their homes and families through healthy relationships and equal partnerships.

Goals:

  1. Increase the percentage of Utahns who are aware of and utilize research-based resources that help them strengthen healthy relationships in home and family. [Metrics Forthcoming]
  2. Strengthen marriages in Utah to increase the number of children growing up in stable, healthy, two-parent families. [Metrics Forthcoming]
  3. Change Utahns’ agreement (understanding and perceptions) in the following areas: [Metric Dashboard]
    1. I have an equal voice in decision making within my home. [Increase women’s agreement by 5% by 2026 and 10% by 2030]
    2. I feel the load of domestic labor is shared equitably within my home. [Increase women’s agreement by 10% by 2026 and 20% by 2030]
    3. I feel the load of caregiving is shared equitably within my home. [Increase women’s agreement by 10% by 2026 and 20% by 2030]
    4. I value my own sexual satisfaction as equally important as a partner’s satisfaction. [Increase women’s agreement by 5% by 2026 and 10% by 2030]
  4. Improve the percentage of Utahns who perceive equal partnerships in the home, particularly within areas of emotional labor, communication, and conflict management. [Metric Forthcoming]
  5. Increase awareness, understanding, and education of the following: [Metrics Forthcoming]
    1. Shared decision making and action taking in the home (e.g., finances, childrearing).
    2. Caregiving responsibilities (e.g., children, aging parents, or other relatives).
    3. Healthy communication between partners and in family systems, including respect and conflict negotiation/resolution.
    4. Women’s sexuality and intimate relationship needs.
  6. Support the goals and efforts in collaborating spokes: Finance, Childcare, Domestic Violence, and Child Sexual Abuse.

Thriving Statement: Women and girls thrive when they experience healthy relationships and equitable partnerships in their homes and families.
