Academic Advisement Awards Program

We honor individuals making significant contributions to advisement within their positions at UVU.

Individual awards are available in four categories: Academic Advisor of the Year, New Academic Advisor of the Year, Champion of Advising, and Legacy of Advising.  Winners receive a plaque, a cash award, and are announced at UVU's annual Advisement Conference.

Academic Advisor of the Year

Eligibility

  • Currently employed as an Academic Advisor or Academic Counselor in a UVU College/School
  • Has been employed as an Academic Advisor for three or more consecutive years at UVU by the nomination due date
  • Has not received this same award within the past five years

New Advisor of the Year

Eligibility

  • Currently employed as an Academic Advisor or Academic Counselor in a UVU College/School
  • Has been employed as an Academic Advisor for less than three consecutive years at UVU by the nomination due date
  • Has not received this same award previously
 

Advisement Support Award

Eligibility

  • Any full-time UVU Employee (other than college/school academic advisors or counselors) whose position involves directly providing student advising/counseling guidance and support
  • Has not received this same award within the past five years

Criteria:

UVU espouses the same award criteria championed by NACADA, the Global Community for Academic Advising.  Examples of items such as the following will be considered by the selection committee:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies and procedures
  • Availability to advisees, faculty or staff
  • Ability to engage in, promote and support developmental advising
  • Frequency of contact with advisees
  • Evidence of advising in a manner consistent with UVU Advisement Competencies and that reflects the NACADA Core Competencies and Core Values
  • Evidence of advising that reflects the standards of good practice in the CAS Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising
  • Appropriate referral activity
  • Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
  • Participation in and support of advisor professional development programs
  • Evidence of student success rate, by advisor or department
  • Perception by colleagues of nominee’s advising skills
  • Caring, helpful attitude towards advisees, faculty and staff
  • Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising
  • Meeting advisees in informal settings
  • Participation in and support of intrusive advising to build strong relationships with advisees
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals

  • should highlight a few examples from the award criteria

  • Nominee's Resume or Curriculum Vita
  • Statement of Personal Advising Philosophy
  • Supervisor Consent Form (provided upon nomination)
  • Up to eight (four double-sided) pages of additional portfolio evidence (i.e. data, letters of recommendation, certification activity, projects, etc.) that highlight how the nominee meets the award criteria may be submitted by the nominee for consideration if desired

Champion of Academic Advising

Eligibility

The Office of University Advising recognizes those in the UVU community whose actions demonstrate commitment, advocacy, and actions in support of the UVU advising program.  Those recognized with this honor are selected by the Office of University Advising and institutional academic advising leadership.

This award does not require a formal nomination but suggestions are welcome.

Legacy of Academic Advising

Eligibility

The Office of University Advising recognizes individuals in the UVU community who have made a significant impact while employed as an exemplary Academic Advisor and/or provided exemplary support for the academic advising program for a considerable number of years.  Those recognized with this honor are selected by the Office of University Advising and institutional academic advising leadership. 

This award does not require a formal nomination but suggestions are welcome.
