“Architectural Moments: A Proposal for Detailing Traditional Architecture”

The design of a home has a few moments to express the architectural style and sophistication. Knowing how these moments are detailed and constructed is crucial to getting a house right. This lecture proposes a new process for detailing traditional architecture that achieves several ideals not usually found in a single system. It lays out underlying principles of six families of architectural elements used in a broad range of traditional styles, contrasting them with how they are commonly built in error

Steve Mouzon is an architect, urbanist, author, blogger, and photographer from Miami. He founded the New Urban Guild, which helped foster the Katrina Cottages movement. The Guild hosts Project:SmartDwelling, which works to redefine the house to be much smaller and more sustainable. Steve founded and is a board member of the Guild Foundation; it hosts the Original Green initiative. Steve speaks regularly across the US and abroad on sustainability issues. He blogs on the Original Green Blog, Useful Stuff, and We Do This Because… He also posts to the Original Green Twitter stream.

AIA Objectives:
-Learn how to correctly detail and construct commonly problematic elements of traditional architecture.
-Understand how design details are used in a broad range of architectural styles.
-Discover how traditional architecture evolves and changes over time
-Understand the relationship between building details and cost

“Learning to Draw Architecture”

Everyone has the ability to draw. As children, we all drew pictures to communicate how we perceived the world around us, and drawing is much like playing a musical instrument, so with practice, good tutelage and a positive attitude, we can all develop our skills.

David R. Csont, Chief Illustrator at Urban Design Associates, has developed his mastery of drawing during 30 years of practical experience as an architectural illustrator. In this lecture, David lays out practical, actionable methods for effective architectural drawing.

AIA Objectives:
-Learn how drawing can communicate how we perceive the world around us
-Understand how to improve visual communication through practice over time
-Discover skills and techniques for 3d visualization of architectural projects
-Understand different visual media from hand rendering to digital rendering
