UVU Architecture Students Shine at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research in Long Beach, CA

Long Beach, CA — April 29, 2024

Utah Valley University's architecture students made a significant impact at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) held in Long Beach, California. From engaging in vibrant discussions with undergraduates from across the nation to exploring Southern California's iconic architecture, these students truly left their mark on the national stage.

Inspiring Conversations and Academic Exchange
UVU students connected with peers from various fields, exchanging ideas and perspectives that will shape the future of architecture. The conference provided a platform for students to showcase their research, receive feedback, and broaden their understanding of architecture's role in society.

Jared Bradshaw, an architecture student, reflected on the experience: "It was an honor and privilege to attend and present my research at NCUR. Conducting student research and being mentored by Professor Brandon Ro has been some of the most engaging learning I have done. By conducting research, I not only learned about my topic but also learned more about how to learn. Presenting to peers from across the country and receiving their feedback opened my eyes to new avenues of research."

Exploring SoCal Architecture
The students immersed themselves in Southern California's rich architectural landscape and gained fresh insights and inspiration. From modern marvels to historic gems, the architectural diversity of the region provided a wealth of learning opportunities.

Nathaniel Stucki shared his thoughts: "Presenting at this conference made me feel accomplished and gave me the confidence to discuss my project. This project helped me understand that architecture is not just about building structures but about creating habitats for people. The opportunity to stretch my wings in this research project alleviated fears concerning my future in architecture."

Memorable Experiences Beyond the Conference
The students' journey was filled with memorable experiences ranging from showing off their dance moves at the after-party to witnessing thrilling test runs of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. These activities not only enriched their experience but also strengthened the bonds within the cohort.

Eric Burton, who presented his research at NCUR, highlighted the diverse learning opportunities: "NCUR was a unique experience, giving me access to research from countless fields of study. It allowed me to connect more with my own cohort, as well as other NCUR students. The after-party was a fun way to unwind and get to know others. While my time at NCUR was short, it is one of the experiences in my college career that I will remember for years to come."

A Broader Perspective on Research
For many students, presenting at a national level was a transformative experience that deepened their understanding of architecture and its interdisciplinary connections. Jean-Claude Coomer emphasized the value of this exposure: "The ability to share ideas and gain insights into a wide variety of academic fields of study across the country was eye-opening. The diversity of students and the communal quality of the experience made it an unforgettable journey."

Strengthening UVU's Architecture Program
The success of UVU's students at NCUR not only highlights their academic achievements but also raises the profile of UVU's architecture program on a national stage. Colton Korpi, who presented his research, noted: "Presenting at a national level was rewarding and deepened my interest in academic research. UVU should continue to support architecture students in presenting at conferences because it increases the credibility of the university and allows students to participate in opportunities outside of the studio."
