Chari Pack '99
Chari Pack ’99, business, is the CEO and founder of Persnickety Prints based in Orem. Persnickety Prints provides printing services and focus on printing images and other art with high archival quality that are environmentally friendly. Here, Chari tells us what inspired her to create her business and how she works to ensure that the customer is always first.
What was your path to your current career and why did you make these choices? Were you always looking to work in entrepreneurship and photography?
I attended UVU in the 90s when it was Utah Valley Community College. I wasn’t planning on being an entrepreneur; I attended UVU to continue my education and simply keep learning. I then became a stay-at-home mom to three little boys. Ten years later, I took a community night class at UVU to learn how to “digital scrapbook” in Adobe Photoshop. This put me on the path to finding a solution for other women who wanted quality 12x12” photographs at an affordable price.
What are some of the key responsibilities of your role? What does a “day in the life” look like for you?
In the beginning, I wore all the hats; now I wear about 10. I’ve hired a great team (20) who print, process, quality check, and ship online orders out of our Orem location every day. I spend most of my days in meetings, delegating tasks, solving problems, and networking.
What is your favorite part of your job or what are you most proud of and why?
I’m proud of myself for creating something out of nothing, while staying out of debt.
What is one of the key issues your industry is facing and your thoughts on addressing this challenge?
The past two years have been the most challenging. This year, increased costs is a challenge; I don’t like raising prices. The customer is always first. Our 12x12” print, our bread and butter, is still $1.99, the same price as it was in 2010. Another big issue is hiring. The younger generation doesn’t want to work.
What advice do you have for someone interested in your industry or interested in freelancing in general?
Long-term success doesn’t happen without hard work, grit, and perseverance.
Why does UVU matter to you?
UVU is my home. I’ve grown up here, and I’ve watched it transform over the past 40 years. I’m amazed at how much it’s grown! UVU has so many opportunities for everyone, even if you’re a stay-at-home mom wanting to learn a new skill!
Utah Valley University is proud of the impact our more than 100,000 alumni make in diverse industries. Visit uvualumni.org for more Wolverine Stories and alumni and student networking programs. For opportunities to give back to UVU, go to uvu.edu/evergreen.
