Terminology: Convocation vs Commencement

Convocation:

Convocation is held at the college level. This is where you'll have the honor of hearing your name and degree announced as you walk across the stage, culminating in a handshake with the dean. It's a moment to be cherished as you officially transition from student to graduate.

Commencement:

Commencement is a grand-scale celebration involving all the graduates of the university, to celebrate your huge achievement! President and other keynote speakers address the graduating class and congratulate all the graduates on their hard work. The ceremony also includes a processional march, pomp and circumstance, and the awarding of honorary degrees. All graduates will stand together to officially move their tassels and graduate from Utah Valley University!

Smith College of Engineering and Technology Convocation: Thursday, May 2, 8:00 am at UCCU Event Center

  • Student Information:
  • BEFORE: Students will line up by department not by major. Before coming to convocation make sure you know which department your major falls in. If you do not know your department, you can reach out to a faculty member or your academic advisor and they will be able to help you identify your department.
  • Check-In: Graduate Check-in starts 30 minutes before the ceremony start time. The ceremony processional will start on the hour.
  • PARKING: Parking will be near the UCCU Event Center. A map (attached) should help you find an appropriate place for you/family/guests to park and doors to enter.
  • Student ENTER: Graduates should enter the lower-level "ticket office" area. Signs will lead you to the check-in tables where you will be given your name card.
  • Guest ENTER: Speaking of you/family/guests, while graduates enter on the lower level, guests will enter up the main staircase. See attached map to identify different entrances.
  • PHOTOS: There will be professional photographers there (Island Photography) to take headshots of graduates and individual shots of the student with the dean. We encourage everyone to bring their phone, so that you'll be able to scan QR codes, which will be used to link you to your photo.
  • ADA: If you have any mobility/disability issues and need special accommodations to make it on/off stage, please let Administrative Assistant Lauren Hopkinson (lhopkinson@uvu.edu) know!

Class of 2023-2024 Ceremony Date: Thursday, May 2, 2024

Class of 2024-2025 Ceremony Date: Thursday, May 1, 2025

  • Guest Information:
  • Time: Ceremony begins promptly at 6:30 p.m.  To view the Graduate Processional March, guests should be in their seats by 6:00 p.m.
  • Location: UVU Main Campus in the UCCU Event Center
  • Student Information: Even though the program starts at 6:30 pm, students need to be dressed in Regalia and lining up at 5:30 pm, to start the processional at 6:00 pm.
  • ARRIVE: Students need to plan to arrive at the Fugal Gateway Building (new building at the front of campus, right off the roundabout) by 5:30 pm.
  • PARKING: There will be no parking at the Fugal Building, so you will need to be dropped off, or walk over. (Is easy to get to from the bus). The Parking Office is only monitoring Handicap and illegally parked cars in the L lots (down by the UCCU center) so you (or guests) can park in any of those lots.
  • LINE UP: At the Fugal Building each college will have their gonfalon (college flag) indicating where to line up in 4 single-file lines to walk down to the UCCU center. Other than standing in your college, there is no separation by departments like for convocation. I would suggest standing in the same single-file line as someone you want to sit next to, as the 4 lines will be separated upon reaching to the UCCU center. Meaning if you are in different lines, you will not be seated together.
  • PROCESSIONAL: At 6:00 pm bagpipers will start playing and the processional will begin. Graduates will be led by the Dean and Valedictorians down the hallways (Hall of Flags, Science Building, until the Taco Bell in the Liberal Arts Building) to the UCCU center. In the UCCU center, students will be led to 3 doors, Ushers will have line 1 will go through the farthest door, 2 and 3 will go through the center door, and 4 will go through the closet door. You will walk down the stairs to the main floor and ushers will direct you to your seats (Hence be in the same line as the people you want to sit next to).
  • GUESTS: There is not limit on guests, however it is first come first served. Guest should arrive early as the UCCU center will most likely be full by 6 pm and they won’t be allowing more guests to come in once capacity is reached.
  • LIVESTREAMING: Commencement will be livestreamed from the UCCU center. Link to come
