Utah Valley University Construction Management Students Excel at CM Challenge Competition

Utah Valley University's Construction Management students showcased their expertise at the annual CM Challenge competition hosted by Brigham Young University’s Civil and Construction Engineering Department. The event brought together talented construction management students from various regional universities, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities in the field of construction. 

The competition requires participants to create a construction business proposal for a high-profile local project. The completed proposal must include a site logistics plan, safety plan, estimate, schedule, risk analysis, team/company qualifications, etc. Each team presents their proposal to a panel of judges and industry professionals. Teams are awarded based on schedule and estimate accuracy, proposal creativity, project ingenuity, risk mitigation strategies, safety plans and presentation.

In an impressive display of talent and dedication, Utah Valley University's Heavy Civil team emerged victorious, securing 1st place in their category. Additionally, the Commercial, Mixed-Use and Project Management teams earned 2nd place in their respective competitions.

“As the heavy civil team captain, it seemed like a daunting task to produce a complete contractor bid package in just three days,” said Braden Steiner. “However, this task went very smoothly due to all the team members' dedication and competency in our respective roles. The CM challenge took all the knowledge we developed over the semesters and linked it together in a real-world scenario.” 

 

Utah Valley University's Construction Management program is committed to providing a practical education that produces industry-ready professionals. The competition teams demonstrated their ability to tackle complex construction challenges and deliver innovative solutions. The teams are now preparing to compete at The Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition and Construction Management Conference in Sparks, Nevada from February 7-10.
