Project Summary
As part of a senior capstone for Utah Valley University’s Digital Media program, this project focused on creating an educational and engaging digital experience for the Orem City Center Park Arboretum. In partnership with UVU Botany Professor Dr. Ashley Egan and Orem City officials, a team of four students developed a mobile-friendly website to help visitors explore the park’s diverse tree collection. The final product features an interactive map, 24 tree profile pages, downloadable activities, and QR code signage linking users to relevant content on-site.
Over two semesters, the team applied both user-centered design principles and front-end development techniques to bring the site to life. The design process involved research, mood boarding, whiteboarding, and the creation of high-fidelity prototypes in Figma. Accessibility, visual consistency, and intuitive navigation were key priorities, with every page tailored to a broad public audience. On the development side, the team built the site within WordPress— customizing layouts, integrating plugins, and writing custom CSS and interactions to match the visual designs and ensure mobile responsiveness.
The project proved to be a highly rewarding experience, offering realworld insight into how collaborative design and development can support education and community engagement. It strengthened the team’s skills in communication, creative problem-solving, and technical execution—ultimately resulting in a polished, lasting digital resource for Orem residents and park visitors.
