Admin By Request

Admin By Request protects you and UVU by replacing always-on administrator access with a simple, on-demand model. Request elevated privileges only when you need them — keeping your device safer and helping security teams respond to threats faster.
Project Overview
Admin By Request is UVU's new endpoint privilege management solution, replacing standing local administrator rights with a streamlined, on-demand access model. Users can request temporary elevated privileges directly from their desktop without Information Technology (IT) intervention, while security staff gain the awareness needed to detect and respond to threats quickly. Because elevated access is only granted when explicitly requested, malware can no longer quietly exploit administrator-level permissions in the background — significantly strengthening UVU's security posture.
Tentative Rollout Schedule
Initial testing for Admin By Request began in February with Digital Transformation. A pilot program will take place throughout July to further evaluate the tool before it is launched campuswide.
Admin By Request will be deployed area by area through the fall to help ensure a smooth rollout. Please note that rollout dates may change as we continue planning and coordinating with each area. To see when Admin By Request will be available for your area, review the tentative schedule below.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Admin By Request?
Admin By Request is a privilege management tool that replaces always-on local administrator rights with temporary, on-demand access.
What Does Admin By Request Do?
When you need to install software or make a system change, you request elevated access, use it, and then it goes away — keeping your computer protected the rest of the time.
Why is UVU Making This Change?
Standing administrator rights are one of the most commonly exploited vulnerabilities in university environments. When a device has permanent admin rights, malware that lands on that machine inherits those rights automatically. Admin by Request closes that gap by ensuring elevated access only exists when a real person has explicitly asked for it.
Will This Affect My Day-To-Day Work?
For most users, the answer is no. If you don't regularly install software or change system settings, you likely won't notice a difference. If you do need elevated access occasionally, the request process is quick and handled directly from your desktop — no help desk ticket required.
What is Elevated Access?
Elevated access (also referred to as administrator or admin access) is a temporarily elevated level of permissions on your computer that allows you to perform actions restricted under your standard account, such as installing software or making system-level changes. Elevated access is requested through Admin By Request.
How Do I Request Elevated Access When I Need It?
There are two ways to request elevated (administrator) access, depending on your needs. Before using either method, make sure you have Admin By Request downloaded and installed.
Option 1: Run a Single Application as Administrator
Use this method if you only need elevated access for one specific action (such as installing some programs).
- Right-click the application and select "Run as administrator."
- If you are automatically approved, click Yes or OK.
- If not auto-approved, enter your reason for needing administrator access and click OK. An admin will review and approve or deny your request.
- Once approved, click Yes on the popup to proceed.
Option 2: Request a Full Administrator Session
Use this method if you need elevated access across multiple actions for a period of time.
- Open your icon tray and click the green or grey checkmark icon.
- Click "Request administrator access."
- Enter your reason for needing an administrator session and submit.
- If not auto-approved, wait for an admin to review your request.
- Once approved, a window will appear showing your remaining session time.
How Long Does Elevated Access Last?
Access is granted temporarily and expires automatically. The duration depends on the type of request and your role — you won't need to remember to "give it back."
Will Information Technology (IT) Be Watching Everything I Do on My Computer?
No. Admin By Request logs privileged access activity — meaning it tracks when elevated permissions are used and what changed — but it is not general monitoring software. Its focus is on administrator-level actions, not everyday computer use.
What if I Need Admin Access Frequently for My Job?
Admin By Request is designed to accommodate users with legitimate, recurring needs for elevated access. If your role requires it regularly, talk to your IT support team about the right access profile for your situation.
What if My Request is Denied?
If your request is denied and you still need elevated access, please submit a ticket to the Enterprise Service Desk.
