Timothy G. Stout, EdD, is Assistant Professor of Japanese and the Japanese Program Director at Utah Valley University. He earned his master’s degree in Japanese Pedagogy from Columbia University (2002) and his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Utah State University (2013). Joining Utah Valley University as an Adjunct Instructor of Japanese in 2014, he has taught many of the courses offered at UVU, including JPNS 1010, JPNS 1020, and JPNS 2010.
Having lived in Japan for 20 years, Dr. Stout taught Japanese at the American School in Japan for ten years. He served on the AP Japanese Development Committee, working with specialists from the College Board and Educational Testing Services to create test items for the annual AP Japanese examinations. As a member of the APDC, he presented at numerous regional and national conferences, including the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Annual Convention and the Advanced Placement Annual Conference in cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Denver, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. Additionally, he served as an AP test Reader and Table Leader.
Prior to joining UVU as an Assistant Professor of Japanese, he spent 18 years at Waterford School, where he taught Japanese and initiated the new Chinese program, teaching Chinese for 10 years. During this time, Dr. Stout taught Japanese evening classes at UVU. In addition to these responsibilities, he also served as the World Languages Department Chair for 8 years at Waterford School, demonstrating his leadership and dedication to language education.
Several language study books, including the best-selling “Japanese Hiragana and Katakana for Beginners” and “Japanese Kanji for Beginners,” have been published by Dr. Stout. These books highlight his love for drawing and feature original picture mnemonics designed to help readers better learn and recall kanji characters. He uses these same methods in his classes at UVU to help students learn hundreds of new kanji characters each year.
Together with his wife, LaNae Stout, they have five children and six grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys painting, reading, traveling, and hiking with his family.
