Shaun Young

Biography

After nearly 30 years of living in San Diego and working primarily in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Shaun is in his third year as the Director of Clinical Education for the UVU Physician Assistant program. Shaun received his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from BYU and his Master's of Science in Physician Assistant studies from Western University in Pomona, California. Over the years Shaun and the group that he worked for provided orthopedic care for the San Diego Chargers, x-games, multiple collegiate teams, rugby teams and high schools. Shaun is excited to pass on his clinical experiences with the next generation of Physician Assistants. Shaun and his wife Nicholle have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. Shaun's hobbies include spending time with his family, working in his yard, being outdoors fishing and or shooting and coaching travel baseball. Shaun currently works in clinic one day a week at Southwest Spine and Pain in Mount Pleasant.

The Physician Assistant Program received the Data-Driven Exceptional Care Aware Award this year in recognition of its commitment to utilizing outcomes data to support student success and educational excellence. As part of the PA program team, I play an active role in analyzing clinical-year national standardized testing data to identify students who may benefit from additional academic support and intervention.

Using this data-driven approach, we monitor student performance trends and develop individualized risk assessments for students with lower examination scores. This process allows us to proactively identify students who may need additional resources, such as faculty mentoring, targeted remediation, tutoring, or focused exam preparation, to improve their readiness for national board examinations.

This work supports both student success and program outcomes by helping ensure that students receive timely, individualized support designed to strengthen clinical knowledge, improve testing performance, and increase the likelihood of successfully passing their national certification examinations.
