Biography
Dr. Spencer Magleby serves as Dean of the Smith College of Engineering and Technology (SCET) at Utah Valley University, where he leads efforts to establish the college as Utah’s premier hub for industry-aligned innovation, economic growth, and student success. He is also Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University and an active industry consultant.
Prior to joining UVU, Dr. Magleby gained extensive administrative experience at BYU, serving 11 years as Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and six years as Director of the University Honors Program. His academic leadership is defined by a collaborative approach that brings diverse stakeholders together to advance cross-disciplinary education and industry partnership. He co-founded the nationally recognized BYU Capstone Program as well as an interdisciplinary engineering-business graduate curriculum.
Dr. Magleby’s research focuses on product design, technology development, compliant mechanisms, and origami-inspired engineering. His work has been supported by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force, Ford Motor Company, and numerous industry partners. An accomplished researcher and inventor, he holds dozens of patents, has authored hundreds of technical publications, and has mentored over 80 graduate students and directed more than 200 research and design teams.
He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and continues to consult globally in advanced mechanism design and technology commercialization.
