Biography

Jordan Allen (Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln) is a scholar of interpersonal and family communication. Her research investigates the ways individuals negotiate and manage (sometimes mismanage) challenging family conversations. The goal of her program of research is to provide insight into the ways having difficult conversations can be improved in personal and professional contexts. Currently, she is examining how parents and children communicate about their religious difference.

In her teaching, Professor Allen mentors students to become more effective communicators by applying communication research and theory in personal and professional contexts. She is passionate about designing courses that are effective, efficient, and engaging in online and face-to-face formats. Using evidenced-based practices, she redesigned the "Introduction to Interpersonal Communication" (COMM 2110) course to improve student communication skills. By eliminating busy work and focusing on communication application and reflection activities, students are able to use communication concepts and theories to cultivate empowered communication practices
