Biography

Dr. Kathryn Van Wagoner is a distinguished mathematics educator and leader with a commitment to student success in developmental mathematics. She earned a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education and Leadership from Utah State University. While she is happiest in the classroom, Kathryn has served in multiple leadership roles. Prior to returning to Utah Valley University, she served as Director of Developmental Mathematics at Weber State University, where she spearheaded curriculum reforms and initiatives that nearly doubled student pass rates. Before Weber State, she managed the Math Lab at Utah Valley University, building innovative student support systems. Additionally, she organized six annual Math Awareness weeks showcasing real-world applications of mathematics, co-chaired a campus-wide math success committee, and co-founded the Utah Women & STEM Education Network. Her scholarship focuses on mathematical identity and how self-concept shapes learning, with publications ranging from peer tutor training to math-and-art collaborations. A recipient of the Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Developmental Mathematics award from the Southwest Association for Developmental Education, she also served nationally as Chair of the Developmental Mathematics Committee for AMATYC. Beyond academia, Dr. Van Wagoner is an avid outdoor enthusiast who embraces exploration and adventure with the same passion she brings to education.
