This award recognizes and encourages academic innovation to help UVU students succeed through increasing retention and completion rates, in-career job placement, decreasing time to completion. Debra Ward and I were nominated for this award due to our innovation in developing a multirequisite math course for elementary and special education majors. Based on the three iterations of the project, students retention and graduation rates have increased compared to their peers enrolling into a normal track.
The purpose of the Dean's Teaching Excellence award is to recognize faculty in the College of Science for their excellence in teaching.
Lindsey’s nomination letter: Lindsey is dedicated to student success. She incorporates suggestions for improvement from SRIs, SCOTS, and the multiple teaching observations she does of other instructors. She dedicates significant time to providing guided notes for her face-to-face classes and personal mini lessons for her online courses. In addition to the mini lessons, she does weekly announcements for her online sections to increase the feeling of community in her online sections. She is actively working with a colleague from the Mathematics Department to create a summer program that would allow underprepared Elementary Education majors to complete a 2 course sequence and any necessary pre-requisite courses in to a single block over the summer. This is innovative co-requisite model is being funded by an NSF grant and had positive results during the first summer of the pilot. This program is aimed at reducing cost and time for students in the Elementary Education major. Lindsey is also an HEA fellow and participates in multiple learning opportunities provided by OTL each year. She has demonstrated a commitment to excellent teaching and continued improvement.
This nomination letter highlights my efforts to improve my courses, help my students build a community in the classroom, and advance my pedagogical knowledge through professional development.
The Dean's Faculty Service Award is given to a faulty member that has contributed service at the University, College, Department, Professional and Community levels. I have had several opportunities to serve at all of these levels.
