Biography

Derek is currently the Director of the Salt Lake City Police Department Crime Lab and Evidence Units. He began his career as a crime scene technician in 2005. He was promoted to a Crime Lab Supervisor in 2011, and became the Director in 2016.
Derek has over 16 years of professional experience in forensic investigations, with expertise in firearm and tool mark identification. Derek has a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Criminalistics from Weber State University, and is a graduate of the ATF National Firearms Examiner Academy. He is currently certified by the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) in Firearms Evidence Examination and Identification, and has also held certifications from the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Crime Scene Investigator and Crime Scene Analyst.
Derek has been teaching college courses in forensic science since 2009, teaching Introduction to Forensic Science at Salt Lake Community College, and Firearms Examination, Crime Scene Investigation Techniques and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis at Utah Valley University. He's also presented for numerous schools and professional organizations, and is an instructor for the ATF National Firearms Examiner Academy.
Derek is a member of the Association of Firearms and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE), the International Association for Identification (IAI), the Utah Division of IAI, the International Association of Property and Evidence (IAPE), and the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD). He was also the President of the Utah Division of IAI in 2012 and is the former chair of the Crime Scene Certification Committee.
