Marinda Ashman

Biography

Marinda Ashman is an Associate Professor in Student Leadership & Success Studies housed in University College here at Utah Valley University. Marinda's main focus are her students. She admires her student's grit, resilience, determination, and willingness to work hard. Her biggest compliment is when a student says "our class feels like a family". She strives hard to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and lets students know they belong.. She teaches FYE, career, capstone, and Leadership courses. Her research focuses on peer mentoring, and on grit. She fully supports students’ initiatives to help other students succeed.Currently, she serves on committees focused on FYE, student success, retention, and persistence. Serving her profession by conducting textbook, conference, and article reviews.

Ethics Across the Curriculum Mini-Grant

Center for the Study of Ethics, UVU - May, 2021


Participating faculty will revise the curriculum in a selected course to include (or enhance) relevant ethics content. The CSE will provide consultation and support to help participants 1) interface with ethics resources within their discipline, 2) identify best practices in teaching ethics, and 3) connect with colleagues who share common interests.

Training: three 1-hour sessions the week of May 9-13, three 1-hour sessions the week of May 16-20; exact days/times TBD)—$500 stipend paid after successful completion of trainingCourse Development_ completed over summer 2016—$500 stipend paid after successful completion of course development at end of summer (will be expected to meet with Janel Mitchell, instructional designer in the Office of Teaching and Learning) Course Implementation_ 1st implementation of new course design in fall 2016—$500 stipend paid after successful completion of course at end of the semester (will be expected to meet with assigned service-learning course mentor once a month during implementation semester; will be expected to continue implementation of SL course design in spring 2017 also)Course Assessment_ pre/post-test assessment to occur each semester course is offered, as well as community-partner assessment and qualitative student self-assessment at the end of each semester—$500 stipend paid after successful completion of course assessment the end of the spring 2017 semester

Grant allowed for further recruitment and engagement of students in a Summer Bridge Program on campus. Most students were from underserved populations. The award was for $10,000 The Summer Transition Team included 12 faculty and staff from across campus and GearUP. Nathan Hanamaikai and Tiffany Evans headed up the grant
