Biography

Dr. Russell has a B.A. in Anthropology (University of Utah, 1968) and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Harvard University (1977), with concentrations in Arabic and Japanese. Between degrees, served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam era. Taught Japanese and linguistics at University of Hawaii-Manoa (1976-1979). Full-time faculty member of Brigham Young University (1982-2011).

At BYU, taught Japanese courses of all levels, graduate courses in linguistics and language acquisition, courses in business Japanese, Japanese linguistics and teaching methodology. Published research in Japanese second language acquisition and attrition and CALL materials design and development, with most recent work in JSL attrition. Principal investigator of external grants for design and development of CALL and multimedia courseware. Served two terms as Chair of BYU Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages. Served two terms on Board of Directors of Association of Teachers of Japanese and as Language and Linguistics Editor of Journal of the Association of Teachers of Japanese. Completed MBA coursework and has experience working in machine translation software industry. Helped develop field of Japanese for business purposes, with numerous invited presentations and national workshops for teachers of business Japanese.

Retired from BYU in 2011, taught business Japanese part-time at BYU for three years. Taught ESL, linguistics, and business Japanese as volunteer at BYU-Hawaii for 1-1/2 years; currently developing Japanese reading and listening proficiency test items for ACTFL (American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages). Adjunct Instructor of Japanese at Utah Valley University (Fall 2017-present).
