BIOGRAPHY

Professor Mike Smidt retired as a colonel from the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps after 31 years of active service. Mike earned his J.D from California Western School of Law, an LL.M from the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's School, an LL.M from the University of Virginia, and a M.S.S. from the U.S. Army War College.

Professor Smidt joined the Army in 1976 and served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He attended the U.S. Army Special Forces Qualification Course (Green Beret). Mike left active duty and was assigned to the 12th Special Forces Group (USAR). Mike served three years as a police officer in the city of San Diego. Upon graduation from law school, he was a prosecutor with the City Attorney's Office in San Diego. Mike returned to active duty with the U.S. Army as a Judge Advocate.

Professor Smidt held a number of positions including: Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 82nd Airborne Division; Command Judge Advocate, U.S. Army Office of Military Support; Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Army Aviation Warfighting Center and School; Staff Judge Advocate, 1st Infantry Division; Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Special Operations Command; Chief of Operations Law, NORAD and U.S. Northern Command; and Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Strategic Command.

Professor Smidt participated in Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait; Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti; Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn in Iraq, as well as numerous other exercises and operations.
