B.S. Heilongjiang University, China

TEACHING
Dr. Yu is a big fan of learner-/learning-centered pedagogies. She sees herself as a coach with clear expectations and supportive guidance, who trains and facilitates students on mastering and applying chemistry. Dr. Yu designs her chemistry classes for exploring, collaborating, and effective peer instructing. Dr. Yu believes that learning is a process of appreciation, memorization, assimilation, and application. The process is more efficient when students are engaged and involved.

RESEARCH
Dr. Yu is actively involved in undergraduate research. Her research focus is developing quantum dots (QDs)-based biosensing methods for disease diagnosis in healthcare applications. So far twelve chemistry and biology students have worked in Dr. Yu's research group. The students have had their findings presented at regional and national conferences. Summer 2018, the results were published in a peer reviewed journal. Research students gain competency in problem-solving, scientific presentation, and teamwork.
