So much of our American children’s literature canon has roots in the master authors of the United Kingdom. This study abroad is composed of a 15-day children’s literature itinerary across France, England, and Scotland which begins in London, where students explore sites such as Paddington Station (Paddington Bear), Harry Potter Exhibit and King’s Cross, and Kensington Gardens (Peter Pan). It expands out to smaller UK cities as well as Scotland for shorter day trips to literary walking tours that trace the development of oral storytelling in traditional fairy tales to modern classics such as Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare and Dracula.
Through immersive activities, students will journey to the places that inspired famous works of literature including the Hundred Acre woods, studying A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh) and Rudyard Kipling’s (Jungle Book). In Oxford, the lives of C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia), Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland) will be traced. Smaller country towns will showcase the writing studios of Beatrix Potter (Peter Rabbit) and Roald Dahl (Matilda) to further provide a foundation for teaching various genres including fantasy, poetry, folklore, historical and realistic fiction.
Across the itinerary, students will practice critical analysis skills with illustration, writing style, literary merit and quality by examining not only the texts but the various stakeholders involved in the creation of this important medium. This study abroad will utilize place-based learning experiences to connect texts, genre development, author craft and publishing industry knowledge to deepen reading motivation, classroom teaching strategies, writing for children, and a lifelong love of reading.

EDUC 5200R - Special Topics: Immerse and Inspire with Children's Literature (1 credit)
NOTE: There may be coursework during the summer semester outside of the travel dates.

Minimum GPA: 3.0
Priority may be given to those with majors relative to literacy, English, education, or other related topics. Local school district teachers or librarians may receive graduate credit by enrolling in UVU as a non-degree-seeking student to attend the study abroad.
Students with Academic Standings registration holds at the time of application received for falling below a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester(s) will not be allowed to study abroad and should not apply. Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA in the Spring semester may be withdrawn from their Summer study abroad program.
Physical Requirements:
Study Abroad typically involves a lot of walking! Make sure that you will be able to walk long distances over uneven surfaces.
Travel during the summer in foreign countries can be uncomfortably hot and humid. Air conditioning is not always available.
Students on study abroad must be able to independently navigate in a foreign country and be able to follow specific instructions. This may include figuring out and using public transportation, making their way through airports, negotiating large crowds, and making smart decisions related to their own safety in unfamiliar circumstances.

Service animals and emotional support animals require prior approval from UVU Accessibility Services before bringing them on a study abroad trip. Pets are not allowed on study abroad.
Fee covers housing, in-country transportation, some meals, tours, international insurance. The program fee does not include the listed Additional Estimated Costs.

*Please review the Office of Education Abroad's Withdrawal Policy before applying. Within 5 days of acceptance into a Study Abroad program, you will be required to pay a $500 non-refundable commitment deposit to confirm your spot.

Students over the age of 73 at the time of travel may be required to purchase a supplemental international health and evacuation insurance plan through BCBS Global (approx $200-$500+).
Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for travel disruptions including lost luggage, travel and other costs associated with replacing lost/stolen passports, missed flights, flight delays, quarantines, up-front medical costs, etc.
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee .
*UVU study abroad tuition is charged as an additional study abroad fee in your student account. It is separate from the study abroad program fee and regular UVU summer tuition. It is not factored into the "equal payment" calculation of the UVU Tuition Table. Study Abroad students are advised to only take study abroad courses during the block of their study abroad program.

UVU Faculty/Staff Dependent Tuition Waiver benefits may not be used to pay for study abroad tuition or fees.
