Experience Greece as a living classroom during this 15-day study abroad program focused on food, culture, public health, and the Mediterranean way of life. The program begins in the island of Crete. In Crete, students will visit sites such as the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, the Botanical Park of Crete, local olive oil, honey, bakery, and cheese producers, the University of Crete Medical School, the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas, Knossos, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and Spinalonga, one of Europe’s last leprosy colonies. Academic activities will examine Greek healthcare, infectious disease, stigma, environmental health, food systems, physical activity, cultural influences on health, and the social determinants of well-being.
Students will interact with local producers, guides, cooking instructors, and community members. Experiences such as a Cretan cooking class, traditional dance, shared meals, neighborhood visits, historic sites, villages, and coastal environments will allow students to observe how food, family, social connection, work, leisure, movement, and community life influence health.
Throughout the program, students will compare Mediterranean and American lifestyles, healthcare systems, cultural values, and approaches to work-life balance, individual well-being, and community health.

Students with Academic Standings registration holds at the time of application received for falling below a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester(s) will not be allowed to study abroad and should not apply. Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA in the Spring semester may be withdrawn from their Summer study abroad program.
Physical Requirements:
This program has substantial physical demands and limited accessibility. Participants must be able to walk a minimum of approximately 12,000 steps per day, remain on their feet for extended periods, climb stairs, and navigate cobblestone streets, uneven pavement, steep or narrow roads, archaeological sites, ports, and other outdoor locations.
Most program sites and travel routes are not wheelchair friendly and have limited or no wheelchair access. Because these physical conditions are inherent to the itinerary and host environment, the program cannot guarantee access to all scheduled activities for individuals who use wheelchairs or have significant mobility limitations. Equivalent alternative activities will not be available. Students should carefully consider whether they can meet the essential physical requirements before applying.
Hotels will provide refrigeration for medications. However, participants should expect to be away from the hotels and outdoors for most of the day in warm or hot temperatures. Students who require temperature-controlled medication will need to bring and manage appropriate portable refrigeration or insulated storage.
Study Abroad typically involves a lot of walking! Make sure that you will be able to walk long distances over uneven surfaces.
Travel during the summer in foreign countries can be uncomfortably hot and humid. Air conditioning is not always available.
Students on study abroad must be able to independently navigate in a foreign country and be able to follow specific instructions. This may include figuring out and using public transportation, making their way through airports, negotiating large crowds, and making smart decisions related to their own safety in unfamiliar circumstances.

Service animals and emotional support animals require prior approval from UVU Accessibility Services before bringing them on a study abroad trip. Pets are not allowed on study abroad.
Fee covers in country housing and transportation, some meals, international insurance. The program fee does not include the listed Additional Estimated Costs.

*Please review the Office of Education Abroad's Withdrawal Policy before applying. Within 5 days of acceptance into a Study Abroad program, you will be required to pay a $500 non-refundable commitment deposit to confirm your spot.

Students over the age of 73 at the time of travel may be required to purchase a supplemental international health and evacuation insurance plan through BCBS Global (approx $200-$500+).
Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for travel disruptions including lost luggage, travel and other costs associated with replacing lost/stolen passports, missed flights, flight delays, quarantines, up-front medical costs, etc.
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee.
*UVU study abroad tuition is charged as an additional study abroad fee in your student account. It is separate from the study abroad program fee and regular UVU summer tuition. It is not factored into the "equal payment" calculation of the UVU Tuition Table. Study Abroad students are advised to only take study abroad courses during the block of their study abroad program.

UVU Faculty/Staff Dependent Tuition Waiver benefits may not be used to pay for study abroad tuition or fees.
