Course #1 NURS 441G Interdisciplinary Global Health
This interdisciplinary study abroad course will use St. Kitts and Nevis as a microcosm with which to develop a deeper understanding of global health, disaster preparedness, international collaboration in education, community based participatory research, and cultural sensitivity while being immersed in the rich history, culture and natural beauty of the Carribean islands. This course fulfills the BSN Nursing 441G requirement, or it can be taken as an elective credit course. This course also fulfills the Global Intercultural undergraduate general education elective requirement, and is designated a service-learning course. Students will have the opportunity to attend lectures by national government and health care leaders, spend time observing in acute and community health care facilities, and engage in community based collaborative education, service, and research projects.
Course #2 NURS 4320 Global Communuty Health
This interdisciplinary study abroad course will use St. Kitts and Nevis as a microcosm with which to study community health. This course fulfills the BSN Nursing 4320 course requirement, or it can be taken as an elective credit course. Students will have the opportunity to learn first hand from national leaders and public health nurses in St. Kitts and Nevis about their preventative focused public and community health system that has dramatically decreased their maternal and infant mortality rates. Students will gain deeper underastanding of cultural sensitivity, inderdisciplinary collaboration, and advocacy in community-based settings to promote the health and reduce risks amoung histroically marginalized, vulerable populations in low resource settings. The students will learn principles of family and community assessments, epidemiology, social determinants of health, and environmental health with a focus on planning health educational programs within the community they can apply in their future professional practice.
Students should take one or both of the following courses for this study abroad:
NURS 441G - Interdisciplinary Global Health
NURS 4320 - Global Community Health
NOTE:There may be coursework during the summer before and after travel.
Must be 18 years of age at the time of departure
UCAS and Concurrent Enrollment students are not eligible to study abroad

Also open to any non nursing student for elective credit currently enrolled at UVU in good academic standing interested in Community Health With Instructor Approval
Students with Academic Standings registration holds at the time of application received for falling below a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester(s) will not be allowed to study abroad and should not apply. Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA in the Spring semester may be withdrawn from their Summer study abroad program (possibly with no refund).
Physical Requirements:
Students will be required to walk moderate distances on uneven surfaces, climb stairs, and get in and out of vehicles in the heat and humidity. The country is not ADA adherent and a person with mobility needs would experience challenges because there are no elevators in multistory buildings and limited sidewalks. Hotel rooms, cultural, historical, and natural sites for learning activities may not be ADA accessible for wheelchairs.
Study Abroad typically involves a lot of walking! Make sure that you will be able to walk long distances over uneven surfaces.
Travel during the summer in foreign countries can be uncomfortably hot and humid. Air conditioning is not always available.
Students on study abroad must be able to independently navigate in a foreign country and be able to follow specific instructions. This may include figuring out and using public transportation, making their way through airports, negotiating large crowds, and making smart decisions related to their own safety in unfamiliar circumstances.

Service animals and emotional support animals require prior approval from UVU Accessibility Services before bringing them on a study abroad trip. Pets are not allowed on study abroad.
The program fee covers in-country housing and transportation, excursions, 1 group meal and international insurance. The program fee does not include the listed Additional Estimated Costs.

Students over the age of 73 at the time of travel may be required to purchase a supplemental international health and evacuation insurance plan through BCBS Global (approx $200-$500+).
Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for travel disruptions including lost luggage, travel and other costs associated with replacing lost/stolen passports, missed flights, flight delays, quarantines, up-front medical costs, etc.
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee .
*UVU study abroad tuition is charged as an additional study abroad fee in your student account. It is separate from the study abroad program fee and regular UVU summer tuition. It is not factored into the "equal payment" calculation of the UVU Tuition Table. Study Abroad students are advised to only take study abroad courses during the block of their study abroad program.

UVU Faculty/Staff Dependent Tuition Waiver benefits may not be used to pay for study abroad tuition or fees.
