First-Gen Crew (FGC) provides a supportive community and empowers first-generation college students to excel academically, develop leadership skills, and navigate the challenges unique to your academic journey.
FGC members work together to create connections for students through events, activities, and outreach. The program focuses on leadership development through individual coaching, group projects, studying leadership principles, and opportunities to apply your skills. Every student has a unique journey, and we’re here to support you and create opportunities for your success.
Applications for the First-Gen Crew are currently closed. Check back for more information in October 2025.
The First-Gen Crew supports first-generation students across UVU through events and activities. Our team meets weekly, and you will also meet one-on-one with program coordinators. Crew members typically work 5-10 hours per week. Students are encouraged to apply for two different positions within First Gen Crew: Executives and Specialists.
Crew Specialists receive a 3/4 in-state tuition waiver that is renewable for up to 8 semesters. Crew specialists serve on committees that help to plan, execute, and staff First Gen events, expand our social media reach, and facilitate student communication through texting.
Executives receive a full in-state tuition waiver with a two-semester limit. These four positions lead the events, social media, student comms, and professional development committees. They are expected to lead team meetings and work directly with the program coordinator to secure resources.
To be eligible for the First-Gen Crew scholarship, you must:
Being a team member in First-Gen was a blast. I have loved all of the wonderful people who have come together to serve our amazing first-gen students. I learned that sometimes planning and setting up for events is just as fun as the events themselves. All you need is good people to surround you, and FG has the best ones…. I’ve been inspired by each of our teammates’ dedication, compassion, connection, and eagerness to be a light for the people around them. Dreaming of a better world for our students with these people has been an incredible experience.”
