The Northwest Commission on Colleges and University recently approved a minor and certificate of proficiency in national security studies at UVU. Both the minor and certificate of proficiency were already approved by the Board of Regents in September 2016 and will be offered starting August 2017, in time for the fall semester at UVU.

Both the minor and certificate of proficiency are the first of their kind in Utah and one of the only national security studies programs in the Intermountain region. Similar programs across the country have been extremely successful and have provided excellent academic and career opportunities for students. UVU, already well known for its focus on public services and practical education, currently offers over 30 courses in national security and related subjects.

The national security studies minor will give students seeking baccalaureate degrees the opportunity to specialize in the national security field, while the certificate is aimed at existing professionals who are looking to enhance their professional experience or specialize in the national security field.

UVU is the only school in the state that offers a degree program in national security. With its Center for National Security Studies and academic degrees, along with its cybersecurity, emergency services and homeland security programs, UVU is becoming a regional hub and national leader in the national security field.

Careers related to national security are among the fastest growing professions in the country, with opportunities in both the public and private sectors in Utah and across the country. Expanded opportunities for students in the field of national security will equip students for a wide range of in-demand and high-paying employment opportunities, including analysts, policy-makers, diplomats, public servants, journalists, cyber specialists, military officers, and many others.

Utah has seen growth in national security-related jobs since 2001 and has consistently been well-represented in national security positions in Washington, D.C., and across the country. UVU’s focus on national security studies will produce graduates ready to meet the demands of this growing and critically important field.
