The Center for the Study of Ethics is hosting its thirty-first annual Ethics Awareness Week from September 26-29 in the Classroom Building, Room 511. The events of the week feature seventeen sessions including panel discussions, lectures, film screenings, and workshops on issues ranging from white supremacy, refugee policies, religious minorities, and autism in the workplace. The keynote address will be delivered by Provo Mayor John Curtis at 10:00 a.m. on September 26th. His remarks, “Cultivating Positive Dialogue in Public Discourse,” will focus on the ethical dimensions of our democratic culture and the need for more healthy and respectful political debate.
“This week will provide an excellent opportunity to explore what we have in common as citizens and how we can better negotiate our differences,” said Brian D. Birch, director of the Center for the Study of Ethics. “The keynote speaker sets the tone for the week, and Mayor Curtis has been a strong advocate of openness and civility in our community. We’re very pleased to have him join us.”
The week also includes the Excellence in Ethics Award presented this year to Karen Hale, Deputy Mayor of Community & External Affairs for Salt Lake County. With a strong background in public service, Hale is a former Utah State Senator and senior advisor to Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City. She has been a strong advocate for education having served on the Public Education Appropriations Committee and the Senate Education Committee along with numerous other boards and community initiatives. “We cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this award,” said Elaine Englehardt, distinguished professor of ethics at UVU. “Karen exemplifies the best virtues of public service and we look forward to honoring her.”
