Michael Hayden, a retired United States Air Force four-star general, former Director of the National Security Agency, former Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will speak at Utah Valley University at 11 a.m. on Oct. 11 in the lecture hall of the Classroom Building (room 101b). The event is part of the UVU Presidential Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.
“Twice a year, the Presidential Lecture Series allows the UVU community to come together to discuss important topics with leading specialists,” said Frederick H. White, UVU associate vice president of engaged learning. “General Michael Hayden visits us at an important time as US-relations with North Korea and Russia continue to present complex challenges. His insights into America’s position in the global landscape is certain ignite meaningful discussions following his lecture.”
The title of Hayden’s lecture is “Hot Spots at Home and Around the World.”
“There are tectonic shifts afoot in global geopolitics today,” Hayden said. “The rest of the world is watching and wondering what America believes its role should be moving forward.”
Hayden was director of the National Security Agency from 1999 to 2005. He oversaw the NSA surveillance of communication between persons in the United States and alleged members of foreign terrorist groups.
In April of 2005, he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the first Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence. At that time he received his fourth star, which made him the highest-ranking military intelligence officer in the U.S. military.
During May 2006, he was nominated to be CIA Director, and was confirmed 78-15. He was sworn in for that post in two ceremonies later that month.
After 41 years of service, he retired from the Air Force in 2008 and continued to serve as director of the CIA until February 2009.
Hayden has received an honorary doctorate from the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C. He is a principal at a security consultancy co-founded by Michael Chertoff, former Homeland Security Secretary. Hayden serves as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government.
